England game was dream come true, says Suarez

Luis Suarez
"I have been thinking about this, it was something I dreamed about happening quite a lot," he told reporters.

"I'm enjoying this moment, because of all I suffered, the criticism I received. So there you go," he said.

Suarez scored with a clever first-half header and struck the winner five minutes from time with a trademark powerful shot to almost certainly eliminate England from the tournament.

"Before the game too many people in England laughed about my attitude over the last few years," he said. "This is a very good time for me. I want to see what they think now,” he added.

"It was one of the best games I've played. It's an amazing moment for me. Maybe a few days ago I thought this wouldn't be possible," he said.

The controversial Liverpool striker had knee surgery last month and missed the opening game against Costa Rica, so he was also keen to pay tribute to his doctor Walter Ferreira.

"If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be here," Suarez said.

Recalling his winning goal, Suarez, who has served lengthy bans in England for racially abusing and biting opponents, said he wanted to dedicate it to those people who had stuck with him.

"When I saw the ball I closed my eyes and kicked it for all the things I went through, for the people that supported me," he said, his voice cracking. "And it went in.

"Nobody could have imagined a match like this," the 27-year-old said.

Uruguay joined Italy and Costa Rica, who play on Friday, on three points at the top of the group.

Cameroon coach 'disgusted' after player head-butts teammate

FIFA World Cup
The pair had to be separated by striker Pierre Webo after clashing in the 90th minute of the one-sided encounter at the Amazonia Arena. After the match, a furious Cameroon coach Volker Finke vowed to ascertain the cause of the incident.

"It's clear we have to find the reasons what's going on because such behaviour is really disgusting. It won't do, it's impossible," Finke said.

Earlier, midfielder Alex Song was shown a straight red card for elbowing Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic in the back. The result means the 'Indomitable Lions' are eliminated from the tournament despite a group match against Brazil to come.

Cameroon's disastrous campaign follows a series of off-field controversies that blighted their preparations for the event. The squad almost refused to board the flight to Brazil over a pay dispute while their star striker Cameron Eto'o has faced allegations about his personal life.

Eto'o vowed on Tuesday to "respond to all accusations" and "reveal names" after the World Cup. The capitulation against Croatia was Cameroon's sixth straight World Cup loss.

They have managed just one World Cup victory -- a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia in 2002 -- since becoming the first African nation to make the tournament's quarterfinals in 1990.

World Cup: Name tags needed for Russian, South Korean players

Name tags needed for Russian, Korean players
Russia's coach, Fabio Capello, when asked if it wasn't an insult that his team couldn't name any Koreans, shrugged: "It's not important to know names of players, what is important is to know their characteristics."

The Korean captain, Koo-Ja-Chael, was equally candid when challenged later if he could list any of the Russian side.

"No, I don't know their names, but I know their numbers," the Mainz 05 midfielder replied.

Korea's coach, Hong Myung-Bo, was asked at the post-match press conference whether he regarded the Russians' admission as an insult, smiled: "Actually it's not easy for Korean players to be memorised by foreigners."

Russia face Korean test in Cuiaba

Out-of-sorts South Korea face a Russia side desperate to prove a point in Cuiaba on Tuesday.

The Korean's fortunes have nosedived since the heady days of 2002 when they turned the formbook on its head by becoming the first Asian side to make it through to the semi-finals.

But before reaching their eighth consecutive World Cup, they struggled in qualifying, squeaking home only on goal difference.

They also lost World Cup warm-ups to Tunisia, 1-0, and more worryingly a 4-0 drubbing by Ghana last week.

Coach Hong Myung-Bo is fretting over his Taeguk Warriors' fate in Brazil, aware that defensive frailties will make the going tough for them in a Group H also containing favourites Belgium and Algeria.

Hong, 45, gained iconic status in Seoul after his side-footed penalty took Guus Hiddink's side into the 2002 World Cup last four.

He insists that rather than regressing, the Korean team has made progress in the last 12 years.

"The fact is that the quality of football in South Korea has developed a lot since 2002," he declared.

The Koreans arrived in Cuiaba on Sunday, 24 hours before Russia. And before a training session at a local university, defender Lee Yong took time out to forecast what lay in store for him and his colleagues.

"It's true the Russian team are quite technical and strong. Maybe the Russians are physically stronger than Asian sides like us but we are well prepared for this game, we're focussed," he told the hordes of Korean press.

"We're well prepared for the match," he pledged.

Unlike the Koreans, who are part of recent World Cup history's fixture and fittings, Russia make their return to the feast of football for the first time since 2002, when like in 1994 they failed to make it out of the group stages.

Under Fabio Capello, who guided England to the last 16 in South Africa four years ago, Russia coasted through qualifying and in stark contrast to Tuesday's opposition are unbeaten in 10 games.

They hold a psychological advantage going into the game at the Arena Pantanal as they saw off South Korea 2-1 in a friendly in Dubai last November.

Capello's crew set off for Brazil missing one vital component of their assault on the World Cup -- captain, Roman Shirokov.

The 27-year-old midfielder's failure to recover from a knee ligament injury represented a serious blow to Capello's plans, with Rubin Kazan's Pavel Mogilevets stepping in to replace him.

Veteran defender Vasily Berezutskiy says the 2018 World Cup hosts are in Brazil to set the record straight.

"We have things to prove in this World Cup," the CSKA Moscow player, who has 78 international caps to his name, said at the weekend.

"It's been 12 years since Russia have participated in the World Cup so our objective is to play more than three games, try to qualify from our group and after that we will see."

Capello's disciplinarian approach failed to win many friends in the England camp, but it's gone down well with the Russians.

"Capello demands discipline and it's a good thing because everyone is working hard, giving 100 percent in every session," forward Maksim Kanunnikov said.

Fellow striker Alexander Kokorin says he feels pressure to produce on the biggest stage of all.

"I really feel a big responsibility because everybody is talking about me as possibly one of the surprises of this World Cup," the Dynamo Moscow forward said Sunday.

FIFA World Cup: Germany face Ronaldo challenge to keep stranglehold on Portugal

Germany face Ronaldo challenge
The Germans enjoyed wins over Portugal at the 2006 World Cup, plus both of the last two European championships and want to get their Group G campaign off to a flying start with a fourth consecutive win.

The Salvador clash is a re-run of Portugal's Euro 2012 opener against Germany, when they went down 1-0 to a second-half Mario Gomez goal.

The pre-match build-up in Salvador has focused on whether or not Ronaldo will be fit to play at the Arena Fonte Nova after a knee and thigh injury.

The 29-year-old took a full part in Portugal's training session on Saturday with team-mates William Carvalho and goalkeeper Eduardo both saying he will play.

Eduardo insists the Portugal squad is highly motivated to erase memories of a "disastrous" 2010 campaign which ended in the last 16 at the hands of eventual winners Spain.

But all eyes have been on the world player of the year's recovery, despite Ronaldo's return to play 65 minutes of Portugal's final warm-up in their 5-1 drubbing of Ireland.

The Real Madrid forward, whose form and fitness will be vital to Portugal's chances, has had a heavy strapping on his knee in training.

But as Germany defender Benedikt Hoewedes pointed out: "This isn't Germany against Ronaldo, but Germany against Portugal".

Germany midfielder Sami Khedira claims his Real Madrid team-mate has told him this is Portugal's time to break their German bogey.

Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski says the Germans respect dead-ball specialist Ronaldo, but there is no fear...

Scolari never called me for World Cup chance with Brazil, says Spain’s Costa

Luiz Felipe Scolari/Diego Costa
The Brazil-born forward chose to represent Spain, where he plays his club football with Atletico Madrid, and made his debut for the team in a friendly against Italy last March.

He was a revelation in La Liga last season, hitting 36 goals, as Atletico won the league and reached the Champions League final, and he will be an important addition to Spain's armoury as they look to retain the World Cup.

Costa said that Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque convinced him to play for the reigning world champions while Scolari never approached him.

"Scolari never called me by telephone. The only coach that I spoke with was Del Bosque who showed interest in me, invited me for a meal and made me realise that I was in his plans," Costa told reporters in Washington, where Spain are preparing for the World Cup.

"I am Brazilian and that is not going to change but I want to win the World Cup with Spain," he said.

Costa was responding to comments on Friday by Scolari who said that he wanted the striker to play for Brazil.

"I was going to call him up for the World Cup. Was I wrong? I don't know," Scolari told O Estado de Sao Paulo. "He would be at the World Cup with Brazil. I spoke to him two times about it,: he said.

"The problem is that there are other interests behind everything. With Diego Costa a Spanish citizen it opens doors in Europe," the coach said.

Indian football needs a hero, says John Abraham

Indian soccer
"One sporting hero can totally change the fabric of a sport in a country. For example, in tennis, it was Sania Mirza, or for badminton, a Saina Nehwal and much before her, Prakash Padukone, look at what Tiger Woods did to golf in the world. I think Indian football requires that one hero," John told a news agency over phone from Mumbai.

"Bhaichung Bhutia nearly made it there, but we need one hero. The minute we get that hero, watch football change in this country. It will take time, but it will change," said the multi-faceted talent, who has been roped in by sports and entertainment channel Sony SIX as the 2014 FIFA World Cup brand ambassador in India.

John grew up watching Argentine footballer Diego Maradona's skilful play thanks to his father, who woke him up early morning to catch up on football matches. He started playing himself, so much so that he now says, "I would have played for India, but I had to make a choice between football and MBA."

But here, at 41, he is living his childhood passion - via different ways.Apart from widely promoting the World Cup here, he has bought the Guwahati franchise of the Indian Super League (ISL) and his home production ‘1911’, to be directed by Shoojit Sircar, will see him reprise late Indian footballer Sibdas Bhaduri on the big screen. It's football, football everywhere!

"Yes right…so much of football happening! My production officer and my production partner are wondering whether this (my office) is a production office or a football office," John quipped.

But on a serious note, John is all for efforts on the part of his celebrity clan's to bring eyeballs to any sport, "Be it kabaddi, football, badminton, hockey, golf or boxing. I wish to promote so much more".

As for the World Cup which gets underway in Brazil on June 12, John himself will be living the magic of the games via the television and a studio, where he'll get to analyze the matches for the viewers with football icons such as Peter Crouch, Robbie Fowler, Peter Shilton, Mikael Silvestre, Ellyse Perry and Sunil Chhetri.

‘Café Rio’ and ‘Football Extraaa’ are the two shows that Sony SIX has planned to dole out during the matches to inculcate prime time football viewing in the country.

Who's John backing?

"Well, I need to study the teams very carefully to be honest. but if I had to put a little bit of money on three or four teams, I would go with Germany and Argentina but I wouldn't rule out Spain and maybe Brazil," he said after much deliberation.

And who's his all-time favourite?

"No one plays football like the Brazilians do! When they play it, it's like poetry in motion. Besides, this time, the World Cup is in the Mecca of football, so, watching Brazilians play would be great," he said, adding that if his ‘duties’ allow him a three-day break, he would love to fly off to Brazil to catch up on at least a few matches live.
