Government likely to seek Facebook's help to promote education

The government, in its interaction with Facebook co- founder Mark Zuckerberg on Friday is also likely to ask him to promote Hindi on its social networking site.

Facebook CEO on his first visit to India will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday and hold discussions with them.

They said that Facebook is keen for promotion of e-commerce and e-health in India, besides taking up issues relating to expanding in the education sector during its chief's interaction with the government.

On its part, the government is reportedly keen that Facebook should take up social issues of empowering the girl child through education and involve in aggressively campaigning against female foeticide.

It also wants its help in the ambitious Ganga cleaning up project, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking up in a major way.

Zuckerbuck, on his part, is looking at deeper engagement with the government in expanding Internet penetration to villages and promoting creation of regional content.

Zuckerberg is the third high profile CEO of a US-based firm, after Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Microsoft's Satya Nadella, to visit India in last few days.

He announced that Facebook is creating a USD 1 million fund to help developers develop apps for farmers, migrants and women. This will be a contest to drive new apps and services in local languages.

"Since 2007, Facebook has been working on new apps and services in local languages. About 65 percent use Facebook in a language other than English, including 10 Indian languages," he said.

US approves two technology transfer licenses to India

While the decision in this regard was made just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's US visit, the announcement was made by a top Pentagon official during the annual gala of US India Business Council (USIBC) on Thursday.

"What is critical now is that we agree on some projects that we can use to continue building our relationship. Good intentions must lead to tangible results, or the momentum we have built will fade," said Frank Kendall, Under Secretary of Defence for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics during his
address at the event.

Kendall, who is Pentagon's point person for the India-US Defence Trade and Technology Initiative (DTTI), however, did not give details about the two licenses approved by US.

He said: "I have also set aside USD 20 million for strategic cooperative science and technology projects with India, something we have done with no other country."

Kendall, who accompanied Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel to India this summer, was highly appreciative of the developments and policy changes in India.

"It was very clear to Secretary Hagel and me that a new wind was blowing in India -– the monsoon had changed direction and intensity. Everyone we met, at all levels, was highly interested in opportunities for cooperation," Kendall said.

He said: "Modi made it clear to Secretary Hagel that India was very interested in expanding its defence industry and increasing the level of technology that could be developed and manufactured in India. This sentiment was repeated at every level. The desire we felt to inject new momentum into this relationship and DTTI was echoed by those across the table".

Kendall said he and his Indian counterpart Mohan Kumar have agreed to establish a written framework for DTTI and to meet in person every six months.

"We also agreed that India would work to finalize approval of the renewal of the Research, Development, Test and Evaluation Memorandum of Agreement (RDT&E MoU) for signature during my November visit," he said.

The two have also agreed to continue efforts to identify specific co-development and co-production opportunities and that Acting Assistant Secretary for Research and Engineering Al Shaffer would continue to work with Scientific Adviser to the Minister of Defence to develop specific Science and Technology Projects.

"I believe both US and Indian DTTI teams concluded our meetings feeling energized, focused and optimistic about future cooperation," he said.

Kendall refuted the notion that DTTI is an attempt to sell defence products to India, saying it is "just one facet of an initiative to build a deeper, closer, and broader relationship with one of the most important countries on earth."

Ban Ki Moon expresses concern over 'escalation of violence' in Kashmir

Ban's associate spokesperson Vannina Maestracci told reporters, "In a statement, the secretary-general said that he is concerned about the recent escalation of violence along the Line of Control between India and Pakistan. He deplores the loss of lives and the displacement of civilians on both sides."

She added, "The secretary-general encourages the governments of India and Pakistan to resolve all differences through dialogue and to engage constructively to find a long-term solution for peace and stability in Kashmir."

The measured statement by Ban stressed the bilateral aspect in asking New Delhi and Islamabad "to resolve all differences through dialogue."

Pakistan has renewed its attempts to internationalize the Kashmir issue. Last month, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif spoke at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) about its resolutions on Kashmir and 'fulfillment of that promise'.

And on Tuesday, Pakistan's UN Ambassador Masood Khan brought it up again, saying, Sharif 'reminded United Nations of its own responsibility'. Khan also said UN Military Observer Group 'must be enabled to play its role in monitoring the ceasefire'.

India has rejected any role for UN or other third parties in dealing with the Kashmir dispute.

Responding to Khan at the UNGA on Tuesday, Devesh Uttam, a girst secretary at the Indian Mission to the UN, said, "The onus of creating a positive environment is on Pakistan which is utterly failing to do so." He added, "It is a matter of deep regret that Pakistan has violated the ceasefire."

Highest-ever FDI will come this fiscal: DIPP

"I am sure we will achieve an all-time high in FDI inflows in FY15 given the extra focus on the same we are giving," Atul Chaturvedi, joint secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), said late on Wednesday at an event organized by industry chamber FICCI.

"We are looking at increasing FDI with all these promotional measures and promoting the country as an investment  destination," he added.

The new government is going all out to boost FDI inflow in the country. It has raised FDI limit in defence manufacturing, it also cleared the long-delayed 100 percent FDI in railways and a debate is on regarding 100 percent FDI in the insurance sector.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in his Independence Day speech announced the 'Make in India' campaign inviting companies across the world to make their products in India and create jobs in the labour-intensive manufacturing sectors.

While the highest so far FDI received by the country was in 2011-12 at USD 35.12 billion, in the four months of this fiscal alone inflows have crossed USD10.75 billion, Chaturvedi said.

As per the DIPP, FDI inflow zoomed 34 percent to USD 1.92 billion in June.

The net investments by foreign investors in Indian debt markets since the beginning of this calendar year have reached USD 17 billion, or Rs.120,000 crore, while the same for equities stand at USD13 billion, or Rs.78,000 crore, taking the total to USD 30 billion, or Rs.180,000 crore.

India Windies ODIs: Ishant sharma replaces injured Mohit Sharma

"Mohit Sharma has aggravated his bilateral shin pain, and has therefore been ruled out of the ongoing Micromax Cup, India vs West Indies ODI series, 2014," said a BCCI statement on Friday.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Ishant Sharma as his replacement in the Indian squad.

Ishant Sharma last played an ODI in January against New Zealand and is making a comeback after missing matches against Bangladesh, the Asia Cup and the ODI series in England. India trail the West Indies 0-1 in the series after suffering a humiliating 124-run loss in the first ODI in Kochi.

Mohit Sharma failed to get any wickets in that match, giving away 61 runs off his nine overs. The second ODI will be played at the Feroze Shah Kotla, New Delhi on Saturday.

Ali Zafar beefs up for 'Kill Dil'

Normally, there are actors who lose weight for parts. But Ali went into reverse gear as he had to put on seven to eight kg for the Shaad Ali-directorial.

Explaining his decision to bulk up, Ali said "I had actually lost a lot of weight for 'Chashme Baddoor' to look like a college student. For 'Kill Dil', I needed a more mature and more beefy look.

"Ali constantly pumped iron in the gym. I am now 73 kg. But I want to lose two to three kg and hold my weight steady at 70 kg. Too much of the muscled look is also not good," he said.

The 34-year-old, who was last seen in the failed comedy 'Total Siyappa', says he thoroughly enjoyed working with Shaad Ali on 'Kill Dil' and doing the buddy-buddy thing with Ranveer Singh in the film.

"It was great fun. But it is Govinda that I most enjoyed working with. I've been his fan since I was in college. It was a dream come true to work with him. It is wrongly believed that Govinda excels at comedy only, watch him in 'Kill Dil' and... well, get your fill," Ali said.

He has not seen the entire film. But he did see bits and pieces of it, and he's impressed.

Lung cancer can stay hidden for over 20 years: Study

The study, led by researchers at the Cancer Research UK, examined lung cancers from seven patients, including smokers, ex-smokers and never smokers.

It found that after the first genetic mistakes that cause the cancer, it can exist undetected for many years until new, additional faults trigger rapid growth of the disease, Xinhua reported.

The researchers hoped this study will help improve early detection of the disease. Currently, two-thirds of patients with lung cancer are diagnosed with advanced forms of the disease when treatments are less likely to be successful.

"By understanding how it develops we've opened up the disease's evolutionary rule book in the hope that we can start to predict its next steps," study author Charles Swanton, professor at the Cancer Research UK said in a statement.

No near-term plan to monetise WhatsApp: Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, who is in India for the Internet.org Summit, said the company is focusing on getting more people to use the service.

"Over the long term, I think there are pretty clear models for building products around messaging products. You can see that through examples like some of the Chinese messaging products like Tencent. Wechat has been very successful.

"We have different ideas about what we can do but for the near future, I mean the next few years, we are really focused on connecting more people, to get them to use our service," Zuckerberg said.

WhatsApp has over 600 million using the service every month. It works across different types of phones without advertising. The app charges 99 cents as an annual subscription fee, which is waived off for the first year.

According to reports, Facebook's final WhatsApp acquisition price tag has risen by an additional USD 3 billion to roughly USD 22 billion because of the increased value of Facebook's stock in recent months.

In February this year, Facebook announced its largest-ever acquisition with the transaction involving USD 12 billion worth of Facebook shares, USD 4 billion in cash and USD 3 billion in restricted stock units.

Get ready for Google 'phablet' this month

Named Shamu (killer whale), the new Nexus phone will be larger than Apple's iPhone 6 Plus (5.5 inches) and Samsung Galaxy Note (5.7 inches), US daily reported.

Motorola Mobility, the phonemaker that Google is selling to China's Lenovo Group Ltd, is reportedly manufacturing the phone.

Google also plan to release a new version of its Android mobile-operating system simultaneously.

In 2011, phablets accounted for 1 percent of the global smartphone shipments but this year, these devices will make up 24 percent of the market, according to a report by global consultancy firm Strategy Analytics.

Oomman Chandy promises good government job for Sreejesh

The 26-year-old Sreejesh, who hails from Ernakulam district, had expressed his desire to work in his home state. He is currently employed with Indian Overseas Bank as manager.

Chandy said that it was in 2012 that the state government offered jobs to five Keralite sportsperson who had jobs outside the state and it was only Sreejesh who accepted the offer.

"We then decided to offer him the job of a sports officer, a post equivalent to an assistant education officer in the education department," said Chandy.

"But now he is employed in a managerial post drawing a handsome salary so I have decided to present his case in the cabinet meeting on Wednesday and a final decision with regards to his post and salary would be taken."

Sreejesh made his debut with the senior national team in 2006 at the South Asian Games in Colombo and since then has been a permanent feature in the Indian team.

At the Asian Games, the vice-captain did a sterling job by defending his goal, when the final against Pakistan went into penalty shootouts where Sreejesh saved two shots, ensuring India the gold medal.

Sreejesh plays for the Mumbai Magicians in the Hockey India League.

Ravi Shastri against too many bilateral ODI, T20 games

"If you look at cricket per say, if you didn't have T20 cricket, I would say Test cricket will die. People don't realize. You just play Test cricket and don't play One-day cricket and T20 cricket, you speak to me after 10 years. The economics will just not allow the game to survive," Shastri said at an interaction at the Press Club.
   
He added, "You need that injection by way of T20 cricket. Now how you distribute the formats, how you balance it up, is there any need for bilateral T20? I don't think so".

"I don't think there is any need for bilateral T20 cricket and these one-off matches. You want one-day cricket play it but even that can be reduced. You don't have to play 5 one-day matches series. Keep the emphasis on world cups both in the T20 and in the 50 over format and then let your domestic competitions thrive," he added.
      
Dravid, during the Dilip Sardesai memorial lecture, had said, "I think one-day cricket is seriously struggling. One-day cricket, without a context, is struggling. One-day cricket, if you look at it from the point of view of Champions Trophy or the World Cup, is relevant. I think all the other one-day cricket should actually be driven towards playing Champions Trophy and World Cup. I think there are meaningless one-dayers and too many can actually be a problem."
   
Shastri also felt that teams should also restrict to playing three Test match series instead of four or five.
   
"I believe that over should be only three Tests. With the amount of these things that is taking place you will find that once you go for five Test match series, 80-90 percent of the time the home team will win and you will see teams going straight down after the third match,” he said.

Shastri added, "You saw what happened during England in Australia in the Ashes. I am a firm believer that in future just keep all Test series to three because imagine a side coming to India and they are three zip down after three Test matches, how much interest is there”.

"I am looking at a bigger picture, I am looking at the crowd sitting and watching, I am looking at television rating, I am looking at the way the game is going to the future and how you sustain interest from people who want to watch it and follow. I still think five is too much," he said.

Pakistan, Australia focus on spin for ODI series

Pakistan have been hard pressed to compensate for the missing Ajmal, who has single-handedly won them matches in all three formats of the game in the last five years.

He was reported for a suspect bowling action on Pakistan's August tour of Sri Lanka and was subsequently banned from international cricket after a bio-mechanic analysis found his action illegal.

Skipper Misbah-ul Haq stressed Pakistan must move on.

"It's really difficult to fill Ajmal's gap because he has been the number one or two bowler in the one-day rankings, but if Ajmal is not there we must try to fill his gap and move forward," said Misbah on Monday.

Pakistan have two left-arm spinners in the squad in Raza Hasan, who took 2-17 in Pakistan's six wicket defeat in the lone Twenty20 in Dubai on Sunday, and the experienced Zulfiqar Babar.

Pakistan will also miss allrounder Mohammad Hafeez, who injured his hand on Saturday and will miss the limited over series.

But Misbah conceded that Pakistan will have to put runs on the board after being restricted to 96-9 in the Twenty20 match, with Australian spinners Glenn Maxwell (3-13) and Cameron Boyce (2-10) causing trouble.

"I think the Australian batsmen have improved against spin by playing in the Indian league. If it's spinning and the bowler puts it in the right areas, then its difficult for everyone, its tough and at the same time you have to bat well against their spinners," said Misbah.

Pakistan's batting will again be tested after their miserable show on the Sri Lankan tour where they lost the one-day series 2-1 and the Tests 2-0.

Australia also are without their regular captain Michael Clarke who is facing a race against time to get fit from a hamstring injury for the two Tests which follow the one-dayers.

Also out are allrounders Shane Watson (ankle) and Mitchell Marsh (hamstring).

Skipper George Bailey said Pakistan will be tough even without Ajmal.

"There's no doubt he's been very important to Pakistan," said Bailey of Ajmal. "But Pakistan will be trying to prove they don't rely too much on him and it will pose different challenges (for us)."

Bailey accepted it will be a challenge to counter the spin.

"I still think teams are doctoring their wickets when we come and play to produce very large spinning wickets, which says to me that teams still think that we're vulnerable against spin," Bailey said.

"The challenge for us is to become good against spin."       

Pakistan have not beaten Australia in a one-day series since winning 2-1 Down Under in 2002. Since then Australia have won three in a row in 2009 (UAE), 2010 (Australia) and 2012 (UAE).

Former F1 driver killed in motorbike accident

De Cesaris, who competed in the 1980s and 1990s, crashed his vehicle into a concrete barrier here on Sunday, dying on impact, according to reports in Italy.

De Cesaris, 55, raced for a host of teams including McLaren and took part in 208 F1 races but never won a Grand Prix.

Gambhir targets domestic season for another comeback

Gambhir's return to the Test side in England, after nearly two and a half years, went wrong after he was dismissed for scores of 0, 3, 4 and 18 in the final two matches in England.

Gambhir said making a comeback is never easy and hopes that once he starts scoring runs every thing will be taken care of.

"Obviously when you don't do well there will always be critics taking a shot at you and that's fine. You play a game and when you do well you get praise, so you should be able to take the criticism as well. For me it was always a confidence thing. Maybe making a comeback is never easy, if I had been able to get a few starts, obviously I would have been a lot more confident. For me, if I am confident mentally a lot of things can be taken care of," Gambhir was quoted as saying.

"The important thing is to keep scoring runs. We have a big domestic season coming up. If the runs come, the technical things people keep talking about can be taken care of. Stay in the present, keep scoring runs and see where it goes," he said.

The Kolkata Knight Riders captain's 52-ball 80 in the final of the Champions League T20 against Chennai Super Kings also came after a patch of poor scores.

But Gambhir feels that judging a batsman's form on the basis of T20 performances is unfair since the format heavily favours the batsmen.

"People say it's a batsman's format, but at the same time the bowler has a lot of opportunities to take your wicket. When you are taking a risk there is always a chance you will lose your wicket because you are only playing 120 balls," he said.

"Sometimes team strategy is to go hard in the first six overs and you have to do that even when you are not hitting the ball well. It is always a challenge,” he added.

Apurva Agnihotri wants to direct 'sensible' films

He says he wants to make films that are commercially viable. "I wish to direct at least one or two films. I am not against massy films. Economics is important in filmmaking. I want to stay in commercial parameters, yet make a sensible film like 'Highway' and 'Band Baaja Baaraat', which are not stupid," Apurva, who loves director Imtiaz Ali's work, said.

He believes a project must make business sense. "If someone gives me money for films, the movie should at least break even, otherwise that person won't work with me again," he added.

Having made his Bollywood debut with Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'Pardes' in 1997, Apurva went on to appear in films like 'Pyaar Koi Khel Nahin' and 'Krodh'.

He couldn't taste success in the film industry. He then turned to the small screen, where his popularity went notches higher via a key role in the hit show 'Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahi'.

There's been no looking back ever since.Will he ever direct a TV show? "In television industry, unfortunately directors are unsung heroes. Actors get more credit on TV," he said.

His other passion is photography. "I enjoy photography. I want to do a course. I like to learn. I would like to join an institute for it," he said.

The adventure lover, who participated in reality show 'Bigg Boss' last year, wants to be a part of stunt-based reality show 'Khatron Ke Khiladi'.

"'Khatron Ke Khiladi' is more like my kind of genre. I like adventure. I've done hand gliding, scuba diving and all," he said.

Shah Rukh Khan introduces his youngest son Abram on the occasion of Eid

King Khan, who kept his youngest son Abram from the media glare for almost a year, took to Twitter to wish his fans. In the pic, the cute chubby curly haired AbRam is seen clutching a toy in his hands and staring at the camera as his dad kisses on his cheek. Interestingly, features of Abram resemble a lot with his father and elder brother Aryan.

Abram was born on May 27, 2013 via surrogacy. He had initially spent most of the time in hospital as he was born at 34 weeks of pregnancy.

Shah Rukh and his wife Gauri made sure that no picture of the little one is published. They were furious at the media rumours that a prenatal sex determination test had been done on the child. Shah Rukh Khan had once said that he is not overtly happy talking about him. "He (AbRam) is not meant for flashbulbs. I don't want him to be a participant in this circus of public life that I am a part of. That is what I do... Public life... The good, bad, ugly, goodness of media, the strangeness... I am part of it, not my children", he said.

Nikhil, who is playing the male lead in the 'Tamanchey' said, "We would look forward to visit this amazing place again, but we hope we don't see all of you here again. We pray to god that you get back with your families as soon as possible. It is easy to portray life of an inmate on screen but I can feel how difficult it is for you people to stay away from your loved ones."
