Ukraine broadens offensive against insurgents as military observers released

Ukraine resumed a military offensive against pro-Russian forces in the country's east on Saturday, as military observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe who were held for more than a week were released.Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said Ukrainian forces had seized control of a television tower in Kramatorsk, near the rebel stronghold of Slovyansk where at least three were killed in fighting on Friday, Reuters reported.

We are not stopping," Avakov wrote on his Facebook page early Saturday. Meanwhile, insurgent leader Vyacheslav Ponomarev told The Associated Press that all seven military observers and their five Ukrainian assistants had been released...

Max Clifford jailed for eight years for sex assaults

On Monday the 71-year-old became the first person to be convicted under Operation Yewtree.

Sentencing the PR man, Judge Anthony Leonard said he had groomed and degraded his victims.

Mr Leonard ruled that Clifford should serve his eight sentences of between six and 24 months consecutively.

He said that Clifford - whose lawyer later said an appeal was being considered - should serve at least half his total sentence in jail.

The judge said some of the offences would be charged as rape if they had happened today.

After hearing his sentence, Clifford turned off his phone, took off his hearing loop, turned to friends in the seats behind him and smiled, before being led to the cells...

Ireland's taoiseach urges Gerry Adams to co-operate with police

Ireland's prime minister has indicated Dublin will provide no political support for Sinn Féin in its opposition to Gerry Adams's arrest over the murder of the IRA victim Jean McConville.

The taoiseach, Enda Kenny, said on Friday night he was more concerned about the safety of McConville's children, some of whom have expressed fears they would be killed if they passed on the names of the IRA unit which they say kidnapped their mother in December 1972.

During the peace process from the IRA ceasefire 20 years ago until the restoration of power-sharing in 2007, successive Irish governments have been accused of secretly urging the British and US administrations to turn a blind eye to continuing republican violence, much of it directed against their own communities in Northern Ireland.

But Kenny called on Adams to provide any information he has about the McConville killling as the former West Belfast MP spends another day in police custody being questioned over the woman's murder and secret burial during the bloodiest year of the Troubles...

The 'Zochrot' website states that the organization has been promoting "Israeli Jewish society's acknowledgement of, and accountability for, the ongoing injustices of the Nakba and the reconceptualization of Return of Palestinian Refugees," since 2002.

'Zochrot' promoted the iNakba app on their website and Youtube where it was advertised as "allowing users to locate and learn about Palestinian localities destroyed during, and as a result of, the Nakba since 1948."

In their online promotion, the organization says that users can use the app to learn about Palestinian land "destroyed in the Nakba since 1948", upload photos, share thoughts and feelings and contribute to updating data...

Aid Effort Begins at Scene of Afghan Landslides

More than 2,000 people were feared dead Saturday as aid agencies rushed to the scene of landslides in northeastern Afghanistan that buried parts of a remote village in nearly thirty feet of mud. Thousands more have been displaced by the landslides, which occurred Friday morning after weeks of heavy rainfall, marking one of the country’s deadliest natural disasters in more than a decade.

By Saturday morning, an array of aid agencies had descended on the village of Abi Barak in the Argo district of Badakhshan Province, near the borders with China and Tajikistan. A delegation of high-level officials was also on its way to the affected areas with cash to aid displaced families. Various United Nations agencies, as well as the Afghan Red Crescent Society and other nongovernmental organizations, were already on the ground, the United Nations said.

But the task of recovery, given the scale of the disaster, was expected to be onerous...

Not sure if Priyanka will be happy to consider Modi as father: Chidambaram

You have not been told this, but BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi did call Priyanka Gandhi Vadra "like his daughter".

Modi – as per a report in a leading English daily - said this in an interview given to semi-autonomous state broadcaster Doordarshan.

However, the daily claimed, DD edited out the portion and even broadcast the interview in a low-profile manner without any pre-telecast promotion.

Further, the tete-e-tete - as part of the programme 'Khas Mulaqat' – was telecast nearly two days after being recorded, on April 27. Prior to the telecast, there was even buzz on social media that the interview could altogether be nixed.

"As a measure of abundant caution it was decided to edit out the part where Modi refused to attack Priyanka Gandhi in response to a question, saying she was like his daughter and not a political rival like her mother, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi," a source told the daily, adding Modi even said that in Indian culture daughters were not targeted.

Meanwhile, reacting to the news Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram said, “I am happy that Modi considers Priyanka Gandhi as his daughter, but am not sure if she will be happy to consider Modi as a father figure.”

Chidambaram's statement can be taken as a confirmation of the fact that Modi described Priyanka 'like his daughter'.

Modi is reported to have also said during the interview, recorded on April 26 morning, that he had been "blacked-out" by the DD Kendra in Gujarat. ..

Chennai twin blasts: TCS employee killed; Bangalore-Guwahati Express resumes onward journey

 Communist-Party-of India leader D Raja says the blasts could have been planned to scare civilians at the time of elections.

 DMK chief M Karunanidhi slams Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, says the blasts could have been prevented. He adds that the police did not question the ISI agent arrested in the capital city on Tuesday thoroughly, otherwise they would have prevented the incident.

According to a report, a pipe bomb has been found at the Chennai railway station.

Another person has been detained in connection with the blasts, says a report.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemns Chennai blasts, says the act highlights desperation and cowardice of those responsible. ....
