Sonakshi Sinha makes singing debut with Hollywood film 'Rio 2'

Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha has not just dubbed, but also sung a few lines for Hollywood family entertainer "Rio 2", which releases here in April.

The vivacious actress has lent her voice for the Hindi dubbed version of the movie. She has given voiceover for a character named Jewel, a macaw, while Imran Khan has done the same for another character.

Sonakshi has even sung a few lines for "Rio 2" for an interesting party sequence and she enjoyed the experience of dubbing for the film.

"I enjoyed dubbing for 'Rio 2' because firstly, it's such a fun film, and secondly, because I felt like Imran (Khan) and I were perfect for the characters of Blu and Jewel," the "Dabangg" girl said in a statement.

"There's a scene where Jewel is dancing and singing, so they made me sing a few lines as well. It was such a new experience! I would have even loved to sing more but unfortunately I am only just a bathroom singer," she added.

The English version of the movie has voiceover of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg.

"Rio 2", an adventure comedy set in the Brazilian city of Rio De Janeiro, is releasing in 3D here in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Kajol wants to know when are Rani-Aditya getting married

Actress Kajol, who has acted in several hit films in company of superstar Shah Rukh Khan, thinks Ranbir Kapoor scores higher than her long-time good friend Aamir Khan in terms of acting capabilities.

In an upcoming episode of popular TV chat show ‘Koffee with Karan’, the host, filmmaker Karan Johar, asks Kajol to rank – talent and acting ability wise – Shah Rukh, Salman Khan, Aamir, Ranbir and Hrithik in order of preference.

The ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ actress was quick to crown Ranbir, the junior-most among them, as No 1, though the two have not yet shared screen space.
“On the top I would say Ranbir…I think he is fantastic.”

On second position Shah Rukh and Aamir are on par with each other…there is no up or down in that. Then we come to Salman and so on.”

To another question, Kajol said she would like to ask the Bollywood badshah about his frankness in airing his views. “Why are you so candid all the time? Don’t you know people like to hear nice…pretty lies once in a while.”

Sahara chief Subrata Roy to remain in jail, SC rejects bail plea

The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected Sahara chief Subrata Roy's petition to be released from custody.

The SC bench said that without a fresh refund proposal from Sahara, it can not consider Subrata Roy's interim bail plea.

The SC said it has not yet punished Roy for the contempt of court charge which is pending.

The SC bench also said it has ordered Subrata Roy's detention as a tool to enforce compliance of its August 31, 2012 judgment directing refund of Rs 24000 crore illegally collected from 3.3 crore investors.

Beleaguered Sahara Chief Subrata Roy had on Wednesday challenged before the Supreme Court his detention order passed by a two-member bench calling it "illegal and unconstitutional" and demanded his release.

"Declare the order dated 04.03.2014 as void, nullity and non-est in the eyes of law," said the petition on behalf of Roy.

On March 4, the two-judge bench had sent Roy and two of company's directors to Tihar jail in connection with the case relating to non-refund of Rs 24000 crore to its investors.

The same bench briefly heard the matter in the Wednesday afternoon when senior advocate Ram Jethmalani made a strong plea for "rectification of mistake" in the March 4 order.

"It is a little embarrassing to argue before you that your order needs rectification," the counsel said adding "It is a deep embarrassment for me but if the lordship is willing to hear then I would make my lordships quite satisfied with my arguments".

However, the bench said it would go through the petition and hear the matter on Thursday and then can express its view.

"We will go through the pleadings then we will say whether we are embarrassed or not," Justice Khehar shot back.

Malhotra said his line is "influenced by the romanticism that exists in today's day and age."

The designer incorporated colours like pink, powder blue, beige and ivory along with navy and grey on different prints and embroideries. From zip saris and summer skirt lehengas with pockets, to dress-styled kurtas and easy slim pants, the collection is apt for fashion forward youngsters.

The men's collection introduced print on print and different textures in contemporary Indian jackets. Sherwanis were overruled by bandis, and kurtas got a makeover as shirt kurtas by the designer in his latest range.

'Highway' gets a slow start, earns Rs 13.97 crore in the opening weekend

 Imtiaz Ali's latest offering 'Highway' has received mixed reviews from the critics as well as the audiences. The film received a slow start at the box office and only minted Rs 13.97 crore in its opening weekend.

The film earned only Rs 3.42 on its opening day; however the business jumped only marginally on the weekend. Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, "#Highway Fri 3.42 cr, Sat 4.80 cr, Sun 5.75 cr. Total: Rs 13.97 cr nett. India biz only."

Alia Bhatt, who is seen in a no make up look in the film, is quite appreciated for her role. Even her father Mahesh Bhatt went out to say that 'Highway' is Alia Bhatt's 'Arth'. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film also stars Randeep Hooda in lead role.

'Highway' holds well during weekend, 'Darr@The Mall' is low

As agreed by all, 'Highway' was always meant to show growth on the basis of word of mouth as one couldn't expect an opening on the lines of Imtiaz's last couple of biggies like 'Rockstar' and 'Love Aaj Kal'. The very texture of the Randeep Hooda-Alia Bhatt film warranted that it lives a life of its own which is aided by audience and critics speaking highly about it.

As it turned out though, the film didn't quite have a 'Lootera' or 'The Lunchbox' moment where critics in unison showered praises on the film. Though belonging in the same mould (it isn't a true hardcore commercial film), the film saw mixed response coming its way. No one thrashed it but then the film didn't quite lead to heaps of appreciation coming its way either, except for select members from the film fraternity that went gaga over it. The box office outcome was in line with what audience felt about it, what with around 13 crore coming in, which is a fair result.

The film basically has a week to make moolah since 'Shaadi Ke Side Effects' arrives next which is being pitched (and seen) as an out and out entertainer.

Another release of the week, 'Darr @ The Mall', had exactly the same weekend as Vikram Bhatt's production 'Horror Story' that had released last year. With the storyline of both films being quite similar, the box office outing was also on the same lines with over 3 crore coming in. Released a print count higher than 'Highway', this isn't really an impressive result for the Jimmy Sheirgill starrer. The fact that reviews too hovered around the average mark meant that there wasn't much going for the film. In fact the film's weekend is half of what director Pawan Kripalani's debut film 'Ragini MMS' (6 crore) had netted three years back.

Farhan Akhtar not upset with Naseeruddin Shah's criticism of 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'

 Farhan Akhtar is not upset with veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah's comment that 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' is a fake film and instead believes in focussing on good feedback about the movie.

Shah had slammed 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' as a fake film and rubbished Farhan Akhtar's performance in it.

"No (I am not upset)... To each his own... It is his point of view and he has a way of how a performance should be like. Everyone has their own point of view. I want to focus on the positive," Farhan said.

For me what is important is what majority of the audience feel, what director feels and what Milkhaji and his family feel. As long as they are happy, I am happy. There will be many people who will find fault in you... One must take it in his stride," he said.

'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' chronicled the life of former legendary athlete Milkha Singh in which Farhan played the role of the 'Flying Sikh'. The film created a stir at the box office and crossed the Rs 100 crore mark.

Actress Shabana Azmi and writer Prasoon Joshi have spoken in defence of the film and the actor, saying they don't agree with Shah's opinion on it.

At almost every award function, Farhan has been getting the best actor award and he is quite happy with the adulation that is coming his way.

"I feel very happy with the recognition the film is receiving, whether it is from the audience, fraternity people or the awards. It feels good when your work gets recognised," he said.

Though a lot of actors question the credibility of awards, Farhan doesn't conform to it.

"Everybody has their own take on what awards mean to them. I don't want to comment on what others think. Since the last 14 years, whenever possible, I have attended award functions as much as I can, be it to give awards or applaud other people's achievements. I choose to enjoy the moment," he added.

Farhan will be seen next in 'Shaadi Ke Side Effects'.

A couple of damaged strangers seeking redemption via a road journey is the premise of Imtiaz Ali’s latest ‘Highway’. The director’s attempt to move away from his trademark candyfloss-ness has mixed results: this is perhaps the most picturesque road movie I have seen coming out of Bollywood, but the story struggles with its twin threads and uneven tone. ‘Highway’ is a patchy ride, with the occasional high spot.

Imtiaz Ali’s romancing the road is of a piece with his favourite plot device. This director is happiest and most-happy making when his characters are on the move, the breeze rustling their hair. In his latest, he tells the story of ‘jab’ Veera and Mahavir met, but there is a gap between what he wants his characters to be and the actors who play them. It becomes jab they met, not jab we met.

Veera Tripathi (Alia Bhatt) is a rich, cossetted bride-to-be. And Mahabir Bhatti (Randeep Hooda) is a criminalised, uncouth truck driver. This unlikely couple is thrown together, first reluctantly then companionably, for days at a stretch, as they rattle down the highway. They progress from fear to dislike to like to a kind of love, but it’s more a meander, and believability is a casualty.

Alia Bhatt has walked past her babydoll cosmetic debut in ‘Student Of The Year’ for a demanding role. Her Veera is effortlessly fresh-faced, absurdly young, scrubbed and vulnerable. But the sense of terror and dread that would make the character credible is never fully present.

She displays potential—especially in a harrowing scene in which she tells her companion of a secret that devastated her childhood — but she can’t really convince us that the thread of snot coursing through her tears is not artful. And in other places, she evokes incredulity: a high society Delhi girl in clothes that do not wear any ‘kaajal’ that differs in smudge-size as she rolls about in sand and mud? A body language coach (mentioned in the credits) is not enough: an actor who insists on being taken seriously needs to be able to fit the role completely, and Alia Bhatt falters in many places.

No issues with bold scenes: Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt already seems to be getting experimental - after playing a fashion-conscious and arrogant young girl in her debut film "Student Of The Year" she will now be seen as a deglamourised character in "Highway". She says she won't do something as bizarre as going bald for a movie, but she's game to being bold.

Her father, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, is known to have produced several bold movies like "Murder", "Jism" "Raaz" and "Kalyug" and Alia doesn't find it tough to take up bold roles.

So what if she started her career with a typical Karan Johar film? The actress said: "I would love to do a film like 'Murder'."

"As far as my limitations are concerned, I would never shave my head for any role and so far as bold scenes are concerned, I have no issues at all," the 20-year-old told IANS in an interview here.

Her connect with her father goes beyond her appreciation for his body of work. She keeps her personal life private, but admits she turns to him for advice regarding her professional decisions.

"I don't discuss my personal life with my father, but I discuss my work with him a lot. We have become closer since I have become an actor. My mother (Soni Razdan) tries to ask everything, but I keep things to myself," she said.

As a person, she believes she is like her father.

"I have his will power. I am like him and I value my audience," she said.

Alia is also very sensitive and protective of what people say of her family members.

"I don't like it when people go on about my family. Because of me, they bring in my father and sister (Pooja Bhatt) and I don't like it. Write as much as you want to about my clothes...I don't care, but I am very protective about my family.

"It affects me a lot and that's the only thing that goes down badly. Still, I have a very strong person inside me," said the petite actress, who wonders if the people who write stories about her repeating her clothes, ever repeat their clothes or not!"

Nevertheless, her focus is now on the Friday release of Imtiaz Ali's "Highway".

While she made her debut with newcomers Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, it was a new ballgame to work with an experienced actor like Randeep Hooda in "Highway". She admitted she was apprehensive.

"Initially, I was a little apprehensive about it but when you start shooting, you forget the person in you and get more involved with the character.

"There were times when I would take lesser takes than Randeep or at times more, but I don't feel it's right to think that if someone is taking a long time for a scene, he or she is not a good actor.

"I think it's not the take that matters, you must hit the emotions at the right time. If I take eight takes for those emotions, then also it means the same to me," she added.

Alia is confident that "Highway" will get a good opening and she credits this to its director.

"This film is not about the opening. It is about the word-of-mouth. I think the opening will not be because of me, it will be (because of) Imtiaz. He is a brand name and people have loved his films.

"And the love for a particular film lasts more than the box office," Alia concluded.

Sanjay Dutt's parole: A mockery of the victims?

As a number of people fume over the extension of Sanjay Dutt`s parole again, a loud noise is being created all over the social media over the privileged treatment the actor has been a receiving from the authorities.

Dutt was convicted by the Supreme Court for illegal possession of arms in relation to the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case and was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment. Dutt had served 18 months of his jail term earlier and had surrendered himself to the TADA court on May 18th, 2013 to serve the remaining punishment.

The tragedy of the victims of the Mumbai Blasts is beyond imagination. The serial bombings were miserably destructive and took over 350 lives. It is indeed the duty of the law keepers to see that those who suffered in the event feel that justice has been delivered; and those linked with the dastardly acts are punished.

By extending Dutt`s parole for 30 more days for the third time since May 2013, the Maharashtra Government has certainly sent the wrong message to the society.The 54-year-old actor has been out on parole since December 21 and was going to return to the Yerawada Jail in Pune on February 21. But in order to attend to his ailing wife and look after his twin children, he applied for a parole extension. And his wish was granted! His parole has been extended till 21st March.

In October he was out of prison for a month citing health issues and returned only on the 30th October after his grant was extended by two weeks. He had been granted 15 days leave initially.

Dutt is a Bollywood star and may have an ocean of fan following. He may have even portrayed characters that have struck an emotional chord with the audiences but the question is whether the `Munnabhai` actor should be preferentially treated despite being linked with those involved in a terrorist act – a crime for which the courts have convicted him?

If he has been convicted, whether he is a star or not, he is a criminal in the eyes of the law and he should be treated like any other convict and face the consequences of his crimes. The judgement has come two decades after the blasts, and the repeated paroles and extensions seem like a stab to the victims and those who have suffered.

Though hugely debatable, favouritism is apparent in this case. A number of others convicted for committing crimes too have problems of their own families to deal with. But how many have been subjected to such preferential treatment?

It seems unfair that it’s been less than a year since he has started serving his sentence and he has already been granted parole three times, for a month each.

Every citizen must be treated as equal in the eye of law and must be punished irrespective of the degree of crime. If Dutt, because of his political reach ( his sister Priya Dutt is an MP, in Congress) and stardom can seek personal benefits then people will lose faith in the law-keepers, a faith that is already wavering.

Double treat for Salman Khan’s fans in Sooraj Barjatya’s film?

Directed by Vikas Bahl, Queen, featuring Kangana Ranaut in the title role, shows her journey of rediscovering her own identity while alone on her honeymoon. The movie also features Rajkummar Rao and Lisa Haydon.

The album consists of eight tracks. Each song has its own identity, thanks to Amit Trivedi's beautiful composition and simple yet expressive lyrics by Anvita Dutt.

London Thumakda starts the album on a very energetic note. Sung by Labh Janjua, Sonu and Neha Kakkad, it will surely make listeners groove a bit. The quirky lyrics, mixed with the right beat, will make it a must play at the next wedding season.

Badra Bahaar, sung by Amit Trivedi, is next in line. The manner of its rendition reminds one of Nayan Tarse from Dev D, while the use of guitar and occasional 'veena' makes it captivating.

It is followed by O Gujariya. A very urban duet, sung by Shefali Alvares and Nikhil D'souza, it is a very upbeat party track. An apt song for youth.

Fourth song is Arijit Singh's Taake Jhaanke. Singh, known for creating romantic songs, takes a different route with the chirpy number, which is funnier, happier and expressive.

Jugni (Queen) follows. Another song by singer Trivedi, it has meaningful lyrics and the ability to grow on the listeners.

Nandini Srikar has crooned Harjaiyaan. Her voice infused with the right blend of musical instruments takes the listeners to a different level. Though the singer's voice has an urban touch, the music is earthy and the contrast plays the trick.

Next is Kinaare by Mohan Kanan. A very expressive and poetic number, it has the sound of trumpet and sitar and has the ability to strike the right chord. If you are a dreamer, take a journey with the song.

Rupesh Kumar Ram's Ranjha (Queen), a short Punjabi piece with minimal music, wraps up the album.

Variety is the highlight of the album. It offers a song for every mood and taste. The album has an urban touch, but Trivedi has kept it earthy to match the theme of the movie.

The temperature rose for actor Saif Ali Khan after two of his employees were arrested by the Khar police for escaping with 11 split air-conditioners from his production office at 26th Road in Khar.

The Khar police said that on Wednesday night, the manager of Khan's home production, Illuminati Films, approached them and complained that the ACs, of Dixon company, have been missing from their office since two months ago.

An FIR was registered and the police began their investigations. "We picked up the employees on the same day and began interrogating them one by one. After questioning many of them, we zeroed in on two. And upon their sustained interrogation, the duo confessed to the crime," said an officer from Khar police station. The accused, identified as Subhash Sahu, a resident of Grant Road, and Shamin Solanki, a resident of Juhu, have been working with Illuminati Films since the last five years.

The two said they had committed the offence since they were facing dire financial straits at their homes. One of them wanted the money to fund his sister's wedding.

Sub-inspector C D'mello said, "The accused have been charged under sections 381 (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. They were produced in the Bandra metropolitan magistrate court and remanded in police custody till February 18. We are yet to make recovery of the stolen items. Investigations are on to find out who bought the ACs."

Divya Dutta plays psychologist in 'Ragini MMS 2'

Actress Divya Dutta, who won accolades for her performance in 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', will be seen as a psychologist in Sunny Leone starrer 'Ragini MMS 2'. Sunny and Divya shot together for four days and became good friends. Sunny even paid her a compliment that she was too attractive to be playing a doctor working on paranormal cases.

According to sources, when Divya was offered the role, she accepted it because she had never featured in a film from the horrex (horror and sex) genre and also because the original part of the film which released in 2010 had scored well at the box office.

Releasing on March 21, the film stars Sunny, Divya, Parvin Dabas and Sandhya Mridul. It is produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and directed by Bhushan Patel.
