Shah Rukh is 'king' of Bollywood: Salman

Salman has become the first Bollywood actor to give seven Rs 100 crore hit films in a row, including his recent release 'Kick'.

"You can say whatever you want. But there is a king (hinting at Shah Rukh) anyways. You have problem with him being the King? I don't have problem with him being the king," Salman said.

SRK and Salman's enmity and an eventual patch up has been a fodder for gossip in Bollywood for many years but the 'Kick' star indicated that he no longer has a problem talking about the other Khan.

"You are talking about Shah Rukh?" the actor asked a reporter to a query on him being the king of Bollywood, to which the scribe said he was not referring to Shah Rukh.

Salman then said, "I am mentioning (him). If he is the king, he should be the king, that is his position."

To a query on where he places himself in the industry, he said, "I would be placing myself much behind, right now I am misplaced."

With Salman's recently released 'Kick' continuing a good run at the box office, there is a buzz that the film may cross Rs 200 crore mark. The makers claim 'Kick' has already collected Rs 147.7 crores despite bad reviews.

On the box office result of 'Kick', Salman said, "I don't know about the business. Why talk about Rs 200 crore, talk about Rs 300 or Rs 400 crore or Rs 500 crore. We would be more than happy if the film does more business."

On reports that Karan Johar is paying Rs 150 crore each to him (Salman) and Aamir Khan for doing a film with his production house, the actor said, "Films are not making Rs 300 crore. I wish we get that much. Films are not making that much money, they are making Rs 200-250 crore, some not even touching that much. So how can our prices be that much... it is ridiculous."

Johar also denied the reports yesterday.

Salman will be doing Karan's next home production 'Shuddhi' and Kareena Kapoor Khan may be paired opposite him.

"I don't know (if Kareena is doing 'Shuddhi'). You should ask the producer and director of that film. There is time for that (for the movie to start)," he said.

The actor was talking at the trailer launch of director Kamal Sadanah's upcoming film 'Roar: Tigers Of The Sundarbans' here yesterday.

"I have come here for a personal reason... we have grown up together. I am glad to be here. I know if I come here and people go and watch the film, then it will be of great help to the film," he said.

Salman appreciated the trailer and expressed hope that the film does well.

"It (trailer) is amazing. They are making film on white tigers and we are making 'Sher Khan' (film with Sohail Khan) a little later. I am happy with the look of the film, it is at par with any other Hollywood film. I had seen the trailer earlier and I liked it. If the trailer is amazing then the film would be so fantastic," he said.

The actor says he supports efforts for saving tigers.

"I support it. There are rescue centers all over and there are lots of tigers and panthers in cages... I think one should make a wild park and let them be in their natural habitat. Get them out in the open," Salman said.

When quizzed about whether Kreena will be his leading lady in Suddhi, Salman said, "I don't know (if Kareena is doing 'Shuddhi'). You should ask the producer and director of that film. There is time for that (for the movie to start)."

Hrithik's cameo in 'Bombay Samurai'

Hrithik Roshan
Accordingly, the makers are said to have asked director Dev Benegal, who is also writing the film’s script, to create a special role for Hrithik Roshan. The film already has a big star cast that includes Kareena Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Kalki Koechlin, Akshaye Khanna and Abhay Deol.

Family, friends bid farewell to Zohra Sehgal

Family, friends bid farewell to Zohra Sehgal
Former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, theatre personality MK Raina and Prasar Bharti CEO Jawahar Sircar were among those who turned up to pay their last respect.

Zohra's body was kept in an open area for some time before being taken for the final rites.

Azmi remembered the actress for her vivacious personality.

"I worked with her for the first time in a play in 2002. She was around 90-year-old at that time. She was always punctual at the rehearsals. She was thorough professional and always had a smile on her face. She always used to crack jokes," Azmi said.

Akhtar said it was not possible to write the history of 21st century theatre without Zohra Sehgal.

"She had contributed a lot to every field where she had worked, be it dance, theatre or cinema. She had a cheerful personality," he added.

Dikshit said she had many inspiring memories of Sehgal.

"It was hard to describe Zohra Sehgal. She was a great artiste and a very cheerful human being. She had a brilliant memory. Our country will always remember her. She never took anything negatively."

Raina said Sehgal's death marked the end of an era in theatre. "She was punctual and highly professional. She was always prepared with her dialogues. Her presence used to make the environment lively," he said.

The veteran star spoke about death at her 102 birthday in April this year, saying she was preparing herself to die with a smile. She had told her family that she wanted a simple funeral.

Sehgal had a great innings as an artiste, performer and actor that spanned more than seven decades. She started her career as a dancer with Uday Shankar in 1935. She had appeared in many Bollywood films as a character actor as well as in English language films besides television series and plays.

Often called the grand old lady of Bollywood, she last appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ‘Saawariya’ in 2007.

She worked with some of the biggest stars of this era, be it Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Cheeni Kum’, Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Dil Se’ or Salman in ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’.

A Padma Shri awardee, she also received the Padma Vibhshan in 2010.

I don't care about how I sing: Salman Khan

Salman Khan
"I sing badly but I can sing just about any time. I don't care about how I sing, I sing, I don't care," the 47-year-old actor said in an interview here on Sunday.

"But to be suddenly put in a spot and being told to sing, then I get hesitant. If I am singing on my own then I am fine," he added.

The superstar is quite surprised to see the hype around him.

"Although I have sung before in 'Hello Brother' and 'Wanted'……….... I don’t understand why all this is happening because I have sung earlier," Salman said.

“So all this hype is making me feel like I am singing for the first time. I have just sung a bit better than those two times," he added.

The two superstars grabbed all the attention when they attended the annual iftaar party of Maharashtra legislator Baba Siddiqui in Mumbai on Sunday.

Salman’s father Salim Khan and his brothers Sohail and Arbaaz were present at the iftaar party. Actor

Arjun Kapoor and director Madhur Bhandarkar were also present on the occasion.

It may be mentioned here that Baba Siddiqui’s annual party became talk of the town last year as it was for the first time here when Shah Rukh and Salman hugged each other after being in a war since falling out at actress Katrina Kaif's birthday party in 2008.

Shahrukh-Salman’s rivalry

The famous enmity between the two superstars began on July 18, 2008, on the occasion of Katrina Kaif’s birthday party. It was the time when Kaif was Salman’s rumored girlfriend. The duo got into a heated conversation when Shah Rukh remarked about Salman’s ex-girlfriend Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Things later went ugly, ending the friendship between the two leading actors of Bollywood.

'Yudh' an endeavour to be different: Amitabh

In an interview, the 71-year-old veteran speaks about the show, about his TV journey and about working on the growing medium.

Amitabh Bachchan
When asked to shed some light on his new endeavor the actor told "Yudh" is the name of the character I play Yudhishtir! But there is a 'yudh' (war) in his life too, which he battles with on many fronts. I had wished to do a serial some day. Endemol came up with this project and idea. I liked it and then we set about building a team and getting down to constructing it.”

Talking about the standard of other fiction shows on television he said “I am no judge. The audience is. The ones that garner good ratings are obviously the ones that must come in the category of good. I suppose they set the standards.”

When asked what prompted him to take the plunge into fiction on television especially at a time when his hands are full with so much to do, he said “Nothing. Just the desire to work on an aspect I had not attempted.”

Speaking about his role in ‘Yudh’ he said “the basics are the same. No matter what medium, we actors are acting. And that is how you shall see this serial as well. But Anurag Kashyap and the team wished that they present it differently from what has been coming in the category of soaps and serials. That is the endeavour.”

When asked if he watch any television and does he think the content on Indian television has shown a healthy growth over the years, he said “Yes, I do watch TV and yes, the growth of television in India is by far the largest and the greatest in the world. With about 800 channels currently operative, it's perhaps larger than the entire volume of global channels put together. TV in India has overtaken the return of cinema three fold, within a spate of the last 10 to 15 years. Compared to a 100-year film industry, this must be looked upon as a healthy growth.”

He has proved to be a game-changer on television with Kaun Banega Crorepati.

When asked what expectations his audiences can have from ‘Yudh’, he said “I am no game-changer, nor do I ever aspire to be one. I just want to do my stipulated work. The audiences will decide the fate of ‘Yudh’. And that is how it should be.”

Talking about the new phase and endlessly reinvented career Big B quoted “Phases in a person's life need deeper thought and consideration and comment. TV is just another aspect of a profession I already practice. This fresh attempt is another project. Let us not give it so much importance.”

Smriti Irani has no time for films

Smriti Irani
With Irani assuming the role of the HRD Minister, it seems that she currently has no time for her shoots. The film’s unit has been shooting in Shimla and is returning to Mumbai on Monday. It remains to be seen as to when the actress will find time for her film commitments.

Vinod Bhanushali, president, marketing and promotions, T-Series, says, “Smritiji had to go to Delhi to be part of the newly-formed government and as responsible Indian citizens, we understand that taking on the HRD Ministry’s responsibility is currently her priority. Director Umesh Shukla has already shot with her in Shimla and she will join the crew at a later stage to finish her remaining scenes. The film’s Mumbai schedule begins on June 12 and Smriti is supposed to be part of this schedule.”

Earlier, the film’s Shimla schedule was apparently readjusted for Irani who had to leave for her constituency Amethi on results day.

All not well between Anurag, Sabrina?

It is being said that after Kashyap went public with their relationship, Sabrina hasn’t reported back to work.

According to a source, “In a recent interview, Anurag said that he was seeing Sabrina. Upon reading this, her family was shocked. Her father, in particular, was upset because he was not aware of their affair. Until recently, he only knew that she was part of a big film. He was proud of her work but this revelation has come as a shock to him.”

The source, who is close to the filmmaker, adds that since then, Sabrina has stopped answering her phone. “We only know that her father is upset with her. She has not been coming to work for the past few days,” says the source.

It may be pointed out that Sabrina, who is in her 20s and is fondly called Sabby by Kashyap, has been assisting him on his film, ‘Bombay Velvet’.

Interestingly enough, in a recent interview, the filmmaker had said that he was in a happy phase right now.

Kashyap remained unavailable for comment.
