Forget speed, this device can detect alcohol in moving cars

Representational Picture
A laser device that can detect alcohol in moving cars has been developed. It 'senses' the presence of alcohol vapour in cars and alerts the cops waiting at the next corner to nab you.

"We have demonstrated how a laser device could be effectively used for detecting drunken drivers and, thereby, helping to reduce the number of accidents caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol," said Marco Gianinetto from Politecnico di Milano (Polytechnic University of Milan), Italy.

A similar technology may be developed in the future to detect different chemical compounds, enabling the detection of drivers under the influence of other intoxicants, he added.

The use of the device is simple. The laser system is set up on the side of the road to monitor each car that passes by. If alcohol vapours are detected in the car, a message with a photo of the car including its number plate is sent to a police officer waiting down the road.

Then, the police officer stops the car and checks for signs of alcohol using conventional tests."The device would also identify cars where the driver is sober but the passengers are not, or if there is spilled alcohol in the car," said Jaroslaw Mlynczak from Military University of Technology in Warsaw, Poland.

"The device will surely decrease the number of cars that have to be checked by police and, at the same time, will increase efficacy of stopping drunken drivers," he added.

The device can detect the presence of alcohol vapours at concentrations of 0.1 percent and greater. There seems to be some countermeasures such as driving with windows open that can be applied by drivers to deceive the system.

"However, such situations are very easily detected by the system that sends this information to police indicating that the car should be checked," the authors wrote.

Do you know how your number spread every where?

The fastest growing air traffic in India

air traffic

Twitter Is Launching Its Own Photosharing Service

Twitter has been completely emphatic about where developers should stake a claim, with Twitter Platform Lead Ryan Sarver warning the ecosystem to stay away from building “client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience.”

Well if Sarver stays true to his word the Twitpics and Yfrogs of the world can just give it up now. According to multiple sources, Twitter is on the verge of announcing its own built in Twitpic competitor. Like tomorrow, if things go according to plan (naturally this post might change that).

This shouldn’t really come as a surprise to anyone,  as photosharing is the next logical step of Twitter expanding its in app experience. It’s basically grabbing at low hanging fruit.

Twitter is flinging money around; It just spent $40 million on power user client Tweetdeck which represents 13% of its userbase. It’s only natural that they would spend more resources on photosharing, especially considering how much money is being poured into the white hot space and that images were the crux of the success of competitor Facebook.

I’ve got no details on what exactly the photosharing URL shortener will be if any (Twitter has owned Twimg.com for a long time) or what the Twitter for Photos product will look like. Just that it’s coming, soon. And if they’re smart they’ll put ads on it.

MySpace lost 10 million users in a month; Close within the year?

The latest statistics suggests that MySpace is on its way out, as one of the longest serving social networks on the web.

comScore figures show that MySpace losts 10 million users last month. As the cornerstone to the younger days of the Generation Y, the site is facing dark days after it had lost nearly 50 million users from over the course of last year.

Since the site moved away from ‘traditional’ social networking to a more music based site, MySpace chief executive Mike Jones conceded defeat to Facebok, arguing that the site is “no longer a social network anymore”, and that it was now a “social entertainment destination”.

Since News Corp. bought the company for $530 million in 2005, MySpace cuts to jobs with over 500 staff worldwide being forced out of a job.

But if MySpace is losing so many in such a short space of time, could the site be offline come the end of the year?

MySpace is supported by a few notably large music groups, like the Arctic Monkeys and Lily Allen. But it’s largely a one way street, with music artists seeing the site as a conduit for either better communication with fans and listeners, or a larger scope for potential sales.

However, if comScore figures are anything to go by - then it will not be long before artists cancel or fail to renew their contracts with the site, once they realise that there are better and more viable alternatives for users to take to.

While Facebook may not be the greatest place for a musician or artist to take to, YouTube is and has been a suitable alternative. With combined music and video, plus an interactive format that is keeping up with its userbase, it is a far more ‘liberal’ atmosphere. Though, granted, YouTube suffers from an excessive flamebait war problem, it is nevertheless an ideal, passive and ‘non-sign-in’ needed place to go to access reliable and interactive content.

News Corp. has failed MySpace by not allowing the site to keep up with the times. Perhaps it was used to access the numbers of users required to boost other sites, in a ‘human shield’ like defence? Either way, I would be surprised if MySpace survives the year.

It would be a shame to let it go, but there’s only so many times one can transplant a new organ to an already dying body.

Sony touts high-speed 17.7 megapixel CMOS sensor for cellphones

"Sony introduced the world's first 16.41 megapixel CMOS sensor for cellphones (pictured at right), but the company's now finally back with another entrant in the megapxiel race: a 17.7 megapixel sensor. This one delivers more than just a higher resolution, though, as it's also Sony's first sensor with a bandwidth of 34.8Gbps (or about five times faster than previous CMOS sensors), which promises to allow for 120 fps video at full resolution -- assuming the phone's processor and storage are able to keep up, of course.

LG Optimus 2X Comming In This March

Good news is that LG will definitely, totally, honestly be releasing its Optimus 2X in "key European markets" this March. It'll ship with Froyo on board, however a Gingerbread update is expressly promised, which should allay fears of being left with a very powerful but outdated piece of hardware. Last time we looked, Amazon's German branch had priced this handset, to be known as the Optimus Speed in Deutschland, at just under €500, which sounds about right for its eventual unlocked price.

iDisplay Is Ready To Turn Your Android Device Secondary Device

iPhone and iPad users have been able to use iDisplay to turn their device into a secondary display for some time now (with at least some degree of success), Android users have unfortunately been left to their own devices -- until now, that is. The folks behind the app have finally made an Android version available as well, which is apparently compatible with all Android smartphones and tablets running Android 2.1 or later, and works in both portrait and landscape modes.
