India important market for Lenovo; to co-exist with Motorola

In January this year, Lenovo had announced that it will acquire Motorola Mobility for USD 2.9 billion from tech giant Google, one of the largest acquisitions by a Chinese tech firm. Google, itself, had bought Motorola in 2012 for USD 12.4 billion.

"India is one of the most important markets for Lenovo. Lenovo and Motorola combined are third in the Indian market after Samsung and Micromax... We will continue to sell Motorola handsets online and Lenovo in offline stores," Lenovo Chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing told reporters in a conference call.

He added that while the dual brand strategy will be for emerging markets like India, the company will use the Motorola brand in mature markets like the US.

In India, Motorola sells its devices in partnership with eCommerce major Flipkart. Its range in the country includes Moto G, Moto E and Moto X as well as the Moto 360 smartwatch. It has recently unveiled the second generation of Moto G and Moto X smartphones.

India is one of the fastest growing smartphone markets globally. According to IDC, 63.21 million units were shipped to India in Q2 2014. Samsung had a 29 per cent share, followed by Micromax 18 per cent and Karbonn at 8 per cent. Motorola had 5 per cent share.

"We will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lenovo and remain headquartered in Chicago's Merchandise Mart while maintaining offices around the world, including in Silicon Valley," Motorola Mobility President Rick Osterloh said.

The iconic Motorola brand will continue as will the Moto and DROID franchises that have propelled growth over the past year, he added.

With the completion of the acquisition, Lenovo has added nearly 3,500 employees globally, including about 2,800 in the US.

"This partnership has always been a perfect fit. Motorola brings a strong presence in the US and other mature markets, great carrier relationships, an iconic brand, a strong IP portfolio and an incredibly talented team. This is a winning combination," Yuanqing said.

Liu Jun, Lenovo Executive Vice President and President of Lenovo's Mobile Business Group will be the Chairman of the Motorola Management Board.

Google launches new email service dubbed "Inbox"

Google said it was sending out invitations to selected Gmail users to try out the new service. Users can also email the company at inbox@google.com to get an invitation.

For now the new service is being provided alongside Gmail, which was launched in 2004. It will be available on the Web as well as on Android smartphones and iPhones.

"Inbox is by the same people who brought you Gmail, but it's not Gmail: it's a completely different type of inbox, designed to focus on what really matters," the company said in a blog post.

Google said Inbox displays real-time updates to emails – for example, showing the delivery status of items bought online.

It also shows reminders in a more accessible way that allows users to more easily keep track of chores and appointments.

The company said the new application also enhances features that are already available in Gmail that allow users to view purchases and bank account statements grouped together.

Google's shares were up 1.7 percent at USD 547.33 in early afternoon trading Nasdaq.

Google partners Micromax, others for Rs 6,000 smartphone

Representational Picture
Google has planned to bring the smartphones by October this year, starting with the Indian market. The device will be produced by homegrown handset maker Micromax along with other firms like Karbonn and Spice for India, which is the world's fastest growing smartphone market.

"The device with Micromax is a dual-SIM 4.5-inch screen device with a removable SD card and will cost less than USD 100," Google SVP, Android, Chrome and Apps, Sundar Pichai said at the firm's developers conference in San Francisco on Thursday.

"We will launch this around the world, but we will start with India this fall," Pichai said.

The search engine giant said it is also working with telecom operators to provide users with "reasonable data plans." He added that the phone addresses the needs of India.

According to research firm IDC, smartphone sales in the country grew almost three-fold to over 44 million in 2013, buoyed by affordable devices made by local firms such as Micromax and Karbonn.

In the first quarter of 2014, 17.59 million smartphones were shipped in India compared with 6.14 million in the same period of 2013.

Samsung was the leader with a 35 percent market share in Q1, followed by Micromax (15 percent), Karbonn (10 percent), LAVA (6 percent) and Nokia (4 percent), according to IDC.

Google makes voice search compatible with Indian accent

Representational Picture
“We are delighted to showcase the improvements we have made to Search for Indian users today. These features demonstrate Google’s commitment to India and to continually improving Indian users’ search experience,” said Sandeep Menon, Head of Marketing, Google India.

"From asking Google where you can watch the latest movie to finding out cricket scores at the touch of a button, Google is there to help you get the answers you need," he added.
To choose the Indian accent, the users have to go to the settings in Google Search app, then select Voice>Language> choose English > English (India).

Voice search requires Android 2.3+ and is also available in iOS in the Google Search app.
"Voice has always been the most natural way to interact with a phone, as speaking is typically faster and easier than typing. Google hopes to make Search accessible to an even larger group of Indian users, to help them find the information they need at just the right moment," Google said in a statement.

Footballer Baichung Bhutia, singer and model Shibani Dandekar and chef Kunal Kapur were present during the event.

Yahoo to block sign-in to services via Facebook, Google

Yahoo has decided to block access to its services through Facebook or Google accounts, a feature that had been in place for years.

The company said that it would begin with restricting access to "Yahoo Sports Tourney Pick 'Em," a fantasy college basketball service, and eventually remove Facebook and Google login buttons from all its products.

According to The Verge, it is unclear why the Internet giant has decided to restrict access to its services, however, under CEO Marissa Mayer, it could be part of her strategy to revive the once popular service.

Meanwhile, a Yahoo representative confirming the decision said that the new process would require uses to sign in with a Yahoo username, which would allow the company to offer the best personalized experience to everyone.

The report said that genuine Yahoo IDs might make users more likely to use other Yahoo services, and their activity could be tracked and experience personalized more easily...

Kat Says, Next Time i will Wear Matching Bikni

Katrina kaif

Google’s Real-Time Search Feature Resurrected Through Google+

Search engine giant Google is planning to bring back its Real-Time search feature, which was temporarily discontinued a while back.

Google offered Real-Time search which came with live stream from micro-blogging platform Twitter. Google Search turned into a source of live Twitter messages whenever some world event used to take place.

When Twitter’s deal with Google to provide it with the data came to an end, the two companies were not able to renew it due to certain differences and Google was forced to discontinue the service.

“The value the product was providing was not enough,” Google Fellow Amit Singhal said during a search panel meet, Mashable, reports.

The company is ‘actively working’ on bringing the Real-Time search feature back, Singhal said, adding  that the engineers were trying to integrate data from Google+ and other sources with the Real-Time search feature. Singhal did not elaborate what the ‘other sources’ were.

He also confirmed that Google+ stream will soon be getting its own search engine, a core feature which has remained absent from the platform, which now has more than 25 million users and is expected to surpass Twitter and Linked In in terms of user base within a year.

Google AdWords: Now With Images

Some AdWords ads on Google are now showing associated images — and getting much larger in the space they take up — through a “Show products from” Plus Box implementation that some are seeing now when searching at Google.
For example, try search for bluenile, which brings up a Blue Nile ad. Under the usual ad title and description is a plus symbol (called a Plus Box), followed by the words, “Show products from Blue Nile for bluenile.” If you click on the box, it opens up three product listings from Blue Nile, each listing with an associated image.
The most shocking part of this ad is that how much room it takes up. Here is the ad when it is closed:
Images in AdWords
When you click to open up the product results, the whole visible part of the page is consumed with this one ad. Here is an image of just the ad, that measures about 370 pixels tall for me:

The ad also shows on the right hand side, as Steve Rubel shows. I was able to replicate Steve’s findings, by searching for diamonds. This implementation is better, in my opinion, because it does not change how the natural/free results are shown but rather only pushes down other ads on the right hand side.
Kindle Wireless Reading Device, Wi-Fi, Graphite, 6" Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology
Images associated with search ads are not too surprising. We have seen implementations ofvideo ads in AdWords several times. It just seems to me that Google is willing to try anything now when it comes to ads, from video to images to multimedia and who knows what.
Do note that back in November of last year January, I reported that Google was testing product results within AdWords. But those product results seemed to have been powered by Google Base and did not contain product images.
Google has also been testing showing banner ads in image search.

Google Docs Adds Pagination

Talk to any college students for very long, and you may find that page numbers rule their lives.  They’ll celebrate receiving a measly half-page assignment, for example, or freak out over a 40-page paper that’s due all too soon.  So now, perhaps after discovering that fact, Google Docs has introduced a familiar feature related to page breaks.
A post on the Google Docs Blog announced this afternoon, “[W]e’re doing another first for web browsers by adding a classic word processing feature – pagination, the ability to see visual pages on your screen.  We’re also using pagination and some of Chrome’s capabilities to improve how printing works in Google Docs.”
The post later explained, “Before, if you wanted to print your document we’d need to first convert it into a PDF, which you would then need to open and print yourself.  With native printing, you can print directly from your browser and the printed document will always exactly match what you see on your screen.”  (So long as you’re using Chrome, at least.)
These upgrades are bound to make Google Docs much more user-friendly.  Google’s timing is pretty good, too; this should give students a little time to adjust to the change before they have to tackle huge end-of-semester projects (where those page numbers will really come in handy).
Anyway, Google Docs users who preferred the old layout or are just stuck with small screens won’t be alienated, either, as Google engineers have made sure a compact view of documents will remain available.

Google Panda Update Officially Goes Global (In English)

Earlier, we reported that webmasters were finding signs indicating the Panda update may have been launched in more countries. Now, Google has addressed it in a post on the Webmaster Central Blog.

They’ve rolled out the update globally to all English-language Google users. “We will continue testing and refining the change before expanding to additional languages, and we’ll be sure to post an update when we have more to share,” says Google’s Amit Singhal.

Singhal also says Google has incorporated “new user feedback signals”.

“In some high-confidence situations, we are beginning to incorporate data about the sites that users block into our algorithms,” he says. “In addition, this change also goes deeper into the ‘long tail’ of low-quality websites to return higher-quality results where the algorithm might not have been able to make an assessment before. The impact of these new signals is smaller in scope than the original change: about 2% of U.S. queries are affected by a reasonable amount, compared with almost 12% of U.S. queries for the original change.”

It would be very interesting to know what constitutes a “high-confidence situation”. Domain blocking as a ranking signal could be a tricky area, in terms of the potential for abuse. The company has said in the past that it would look at making this a ranking signal, and that it would tread lightly.

“Based on our testing, we’ve found the algorithm is very accurate at detecting site quality,” he says. “If you believe your site is high-quality and has been impacted by this change, we encourage you to evaluate the different aspects of your site extensively.”

Well, that’s exactly what we’ve seen a lot of sites doing. Whether or not it has been working for them remains to be seen. It’s going to be a matter of time.

Singhal does say webmasters should look at Google’s own quality guidelines. He also suggests posting in the Webmaster Help Forum. “While we aren’t making any manual exceptions, we will consider this feedback as we continue to refine our algorithms,” he says.

Now the fun really begins. Now we can see how hard some of the sites that were already heavily impacted by the Panda update get hit on a global scale.

Last year, Facebook received almost 250,000 résumé applications. To help those applying to the company, IB Times put together a list of five questions

Last year, Facebook received almost 250,000 résumé applications. To help those applying to the company, IB Times put together a list of five questions you should ask yourself to see if you’re ready to work at one of the hottest technology companies:

  1. Are you enthusiastic and passionate about Facebook?
  2. Do you know anyone who can assess or vouch for your cultural fit?
  3. Are you suited to work in a bold and open environment?
  4. Can you make a difference?
  5. Can you let go of work-life balance (for most of the time, at least)?

How does Facebook’s résumé count compare to other online giants? Well, Facebook is still a relatively small company but it’s very clear that the number is quite large, though definitely not the highest. For example, Google, arguably the largest Web company, receives somewhere around 1 million résumés each year, with the record for one week being 75,000.

Google had some 24,400 employees last year, while Facebook had over 2,000. It’s therefore fairly impressive that a company that is 12 times smaller, and has significantly fewer positions available, received just four times fewer applications last year.

In December 2010, the social network was named the best company to work for in the US. I’d therefore be very surprised if Facebook did not set a new résumé record for itself this year.
