WhatsApp faces challenges in US, other markets

"Growth in the United States is a challenge for us," Acton said on Wednesday after a talk at StartX, an incubator for young companies affiliated with Stanford University.
             
He also cited Japan and Taiwan as countries where they could have been more successful with a little bit more effort. But Acton otherwise struck an upbeat tone in his first public comments since Facebook said earlier this year it would acquire fast-growing WhatsApp for USD 19 billion in cash and stock.

Acton noted what he saw as WhatsApp's value, saying he believed it would send 1 billion new users to the social network, even as WhatsApp services remain apart from Facebook's.

He described the relationship between the two companies as ‘separate but equal,’ saying co-mingling the services would create risk and peril.

"We don't look at it from the experience of, 'We're going to get swallowed by the Borg,'" he said, referring to a group in the show ‘Star Trek’ who assimilate other species.
           
Downplaying concerns that Facebook could learn data about WhatsApp users, Acton said WhatsApp had little valuable information to share.

"We don't have much beyond a phone number to work with," he said, adding the company's staff didn't trawl through user messages. Talking to reporters later, he said all messages were anyway encrypted.

Yahoo to block sign-in to services via Facebook, Google

Yahoo has decided to block access to its services through Facebook or Google accounts, a feature that had been in place for years.

The company said that it would begin with restricting access to "Yahoo Sports Tourney Pick 'Em," a fantasy college basketball service, and eventually remove Facebook and Google login buttons from all its products.

According to The Verge, it is unclear why the Internet giant has decided to restrict access to its services, however, under CEO Marissa Mayer, it could be part of her strategy to revive the once popular service.

Meanwhile, a Yahoo representative confirming the decision said that the new process would require uses to sign in with a Yahoo username, which would allow the company to offer the best personalized experience to everyone.

The report said that genuine Yahoo IDs might make users more likely to use other Yahoo services, and their activity could be tracked and experience personalized more easily...

रितिक ने हाल ही में अपने फेसबुक पेज पर लिखा कि मीडिया उनके निजी जीवन के बारे में जो मन आए वही कह रहा है। उन्होंने लिखा कि मीडिया का एक वर्ग है जो उनकी फिल्मों की सफलता को झूठा कह रहा है। उन्होंने इसे बिल्कुल गलत कहा है। उनका कहना है कि कृष थ्री ने विदेश में कुल 55 करोड़ रुपये और भारत में 250 करोड़ रुपये कमाए हैं। मीडिया को इस सफलता से क्या परेशानी है। उन्होंने आगे लिखा कि दूसरों की कामयाबी से कभी असहज महसूस नहीं करना चाहिए। बल्कि सीखना चाहिए। 

गौरतलब है कि हाल ही में रितिक रोशन के जीवन में काफी उतार-चढ़ाव आए हैं। वे अपनी पत्नी सुजैन खान से अलग हो गए और अब उनके पिता से उनके अलगाव की खबरें तेज हो रही हैं।

कन्नौज [जासं]। सोशल नेटवर्किंग साइट फेसबुक सिर्फ दोस्तों से ही नहीं मिलाता। दो साल पहले घर से रूठ कर भागा किशोर फेसबुक के जरिये अपने परिजनों से मिलने में सफल रहा।

मध्य प्रदेश के बालाघाट जिले के थाना चांगुर टोला के ठाकुर टोला गांव निवासी हसन रनगिरे लोधी का 15 वर्षीय पुत्र पंकज पांच फरवरी, 2011 को घर छोड़कर चला गया था। इसके बाद वह नागपुर के एक होटल में मजदूरी करने लगा। जहां उसकी दोस्ती उत्तर प्रदेश के कन्नौज के मझरेटा निवासी मुकेश राजपूत से हुई। मुकेश उसे अपने साथ गांव ले आया व हसेरन के ब्लॉक प्रमुख उदय राजपूत से उसकी मुलाकात कराई। प्रभावित होकर ब्लॉक प्रमुख ने उसे खाना व रहने के लिए जगह दी। इसी बीच उदय ने बालाघाट निवासी आदित्य अंतरे को फेसबुक पर फ्रेंड्स रिक्वेस्ट भेजी जिसे उन्होंने स्वीकार कर ली। इसके बाद आदित्य से ऑनलाइन चैटिंग में उदय ने पंकज के बारे में बताया व उसका फोटो पोस्ट किया। इसके बाद आदित्य से फोन पर हुई बातचीत में पंकज के माता-पिता के बारे में पता चल गया।

Standard and Poor Puts onus of Powering up India Economy on Next Govt

नई दिल्ली [जाब्यू]। आने वाले समय में देश की क्रेडिट रेटिंग क्या होगी यह अब पूरी तरह से केंद्र में आने वाली अगली सरकार के आर्थिक एजेंडा पर निर्भर करेगा। अंतरराष्ट्रीय रेटिंग एजेंसी स्टैंडर्ड एंड पुअर्स ने चेतावनी दी है कि अगर केंद्र में आने वाली नई सरकार के एजेंडा से आर्थिक सुधार हटे तो देश की रेटिंग को घटाया भी जा सकता है।

मौजूदा सरकार राजकोषीय घाटे को काबू में रखने के लिए जूझ रही है और विदेशी निवेश के प्रवाह में भी कमी हो रही है। लेकिन एसएंडपी चुनाव से पहले भारत की क्रेडिट रेटिंग की समीक्षा नहीं करेगी। एजेंसी ने स्पष्ट कर दिया है कि रेटिंग की समीक्षा का काम अब केंद्र में नई सरकार बनने के बाद ही होगा। फिलहाल एसएंडपी ने भारत को निगेटिव आउटलुक के साथ बीबीबी-रेटिंग पर रखा हुआ है। यह किसी भी देश के लिए निवेश की न्यूनतम ग्रेड की रेटिंग है। 

एजेंसी ने एक बयान में कहा कि इस रेटिंग में सकारात्मक सुधार तभी हो सकता है जब नई सरकार विकास की रफ्तार बढ़ाने की दिशा में कदम उठाएगी। आर्थिक सुधारों को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए भी सरकार को प्रयास करने होंगे। लोकसभा के अगले चुनाव मई 2014 में होने हैं। 

साल 2012-13 में देश की आर्थिक विकास की रफ्तार एक दशक के निचले स्तर पांच फीसद पर आ टिकी थी। चालू वित्ता वर्ष की पहली तिमाही में तो यह घटकर 4.4 फीसद ही रह गई है। एसएंडपी का कहना है कि अगर नीतिगत जड़ता इसी तरह बनी रहती है तो रेटिंग को घटाया भी जा सकता है। 

उधर एसएंडपी की इस चेतावनी को लेकर सरकार ज्यादा गंभीर नहीं है। वित्ता मंत्रालय में आर्थिक मामलों के सचिव अरविंद मायाराम ने इस पर प्रतिक्रिया व्यक्त करते हुए कहा कि रेटिंग एक सामान्य प्रक्रिया है। इसे लेकर चिंता करने की आवश्यकता नहीं है।

Vietnamese activist convicted for Facebook posts

हनोई/रियाद। सोशल नेटवर्किंग साइट फेसबुक पर सरकार विरोधी टिप्पणी करने पर वियतनाम में जहां एक व्यक्ति को 15 महीने घर में नजरबंद रखने की सजा सुनाई गई है वहीं सऊदी अरब में पैगंबर मुहम्मद साहब के साथ काल्पनिक बातचीत को ट्विटर पर पोस्ट करने पर 2012 से जेल में बंद ब्लॉगर को मंगलवार को रिहा कर दिया गया।

वियतनाम के दक्षिणी प्रांत लांग एन की एक कोर्ट में एक दिन की सुनवाई के बाद 30 वर्षीय दिन्ह नहत उय को यह सजा सुनाई गई। सरकार विरोधी प्रचार करने पर उसके भाई को जेल में डाल दिए जाने के खिलाफ उय ने इंटरनेट पर अभियान चला रखा था जिसके लिए उसे यह सजा दी गई। उय के वकील हा हुए सन ने बताया कि उसे 15 महीने की सजा सुनाई गई है जिसे निलंबित रखा गया है।

जबकि सऊदी अरब में 20 वर्षीय हमजा काशगरी नामक युवक ने अपनी इस कल्पना को ट्विटर पर पोस्ट किया था। इसके बाद कुछ कट्टपंथियों द्वारा जान से मार दिए जाने की धमकी मिलने पर वह पिछले वर्ष फरवरी में मलेशिया भाग गया था। कुछ दिन बाद ही वहां से उसका प्रत्यर्पण करा कर सऊदी लाया गया और जेल में डाल दिया गया। हमजा के एक दोस्त ने बताया कि बीस महीने बाद मंगलवार सुबह उसे जेल से रिहा कर दिया गया।

मुंबई। बिग बी के बाद अब सैफ की बेगम करीना कपूर का ब्रिटिश सरकार की ओर से सम्मानित होने का वक्त आ गया है। ब्रिटिश संसद की हाउस ऑफ कोर्ट विश्व मनोरंजन क्षेत्र में करीना के अहम योगदान की वजह से उन्हें 29 अक्टूबर को सम्मानित करने जा रही है।

सूत्रों ने बताया कि सिर्फ करीना कपूर ही नहीं बल्कि हाउस ऑफ कोर्ट मनोरंजन क्षेत्र से जुड़ी कई बड़ी हस्तियां जैसी संगीतकार किंबरले वॉल्श, ब्रैडफोर्ड के म्यूजिसियन डायनमो को भी सम्मानित करेगी। 

ये सम्मान ब्रैडफोर्ड मेट्रोपॉलिटन डिस्ट्रिक्ट काउंसिल और एशियन संडे की ओर से दिया जाएगा। पार्लामेंट के सदस्य भी इस कार्यक्रम में शामिल होंगे।

गौरतलब है कि इससे पहले अमिताभ बच्चन को भी हाउस ऑफ कोर्ट की ओर से ग्लोबल डाइवर्सिटी अवार्ड दिया गया था। साल 2007 में शिल्पा शेंट्टी भी इसमें शिरकत कर चुकी हैं।

नई दिल्ली। भारत की दो प्रमुख इस्लामिक हेल्पलाइनों ने सोशल नेटवर्किग साइट फेसबुक और ट्विटर पर नौजवानों खासकर महिलाओं द्वारा अपना प्रोफाइल बनाने और तस्वीरें पोस्ट करने को गैर इस्लामी करार दिया है।

लखनऊ से संचालित शिया और सुन्नी समुदायों का प्रतिनिधित्व करने वाली इन हेल्पलाइनों पर बड़ी संख्या में यह पूछने के लिए फोन आए हैं कि सोशल मीडिया पर प्रोफाइल बनाना इस्लामिक है या नहीं। सुन्नी मुफ्ती अब्दुल इरफान नईमुल हलीम फिरंगी महली ने कहा कि आप फेसबुक पर किसी की तस्वीर नहीं देख सकते हैं और यह फैसला भी नहीं कर सकते हैं कि आप दोस्ती करना चाहते हैं। प्यार मोहब्बत के लिए फेसबुक फायदेमंद नहीं है। उन्होंने कहा कि नौजवानों को संबंधों के लिए वास्तविक जीवन में देखना चाहिए। इस तरह के बनावटी संबंधों का कोई फायदा नहीं है। मुफ्ती की हेल्पलाइन पर एक महीने में एक हजार फोन कॉल आ चुके हैं। इनमें से आधे फोन इंटरनेट का उपयोग करने के बारे में किए गए थे। 

मुफ्ती महिलाओं के फेसबुक पर प्रोफाइल बनाने व अपनी तस्वीरें पोस्ट करने के खिलाफ हैं। उन्होंने कहा, महिलाओं को फेसबुक या इंटरनेट पर कहीं भी अपनी तस्वीरें पोस्ट नहीं करनी चाहिए। यह गैर मजहबी है। हालांकि उन्होंने व्यवसाय के लिए इंटरनेट के इस्तेमाल को सही बताया है। वहीं अल्पसंख्यक शिया समुदाय के एक मौलवी ने भी मुफ्ती के विचारों का समर्थन किया है। मौलाना सैफ अब्बास नकवी ने कहा, 'महिलाओं को अपने परिवार के मर्दो के सिवाय कहीं भी अपना चेहरा नहीं दिखाना चाहिए। ऐसे में फेसबुक पर तस्वीरें पोस्ट करना हराम है और गैर इस्लामिक है।' उनके मुताबिक, 'हम तालिबान मानसिकता के नहीं, बल्कि उदारवादी हैं। हम युवाओं को फेसबुक अकाउंट बनाने से नहीं रोकते लेकिन शरई कानून में महिलाओं को तस्वीरें पोस्ट करने की इजाजत नहीं है।' इन हेल्पलाइनों पर रमजान के दौरान फेसबुक खोलने को लेकर भी कई सवाल पूछे गए थे।

Facebook disputes 21 squatter domain names

Facebook is taking on 21 domain names currently held by Domain Asset Holdings, a known domain squatter based in Potomac, Maryland. The full list of domains is available on Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) Search website (UDRPSearch) under case number D2011-0516.

Here are all 21 of them, 14 of which start with the word Facebook: aboutfacebook.com, facebookbabes.com, facebookcheats.com, facebookclub.com, facebookdevelopment.com, facebookfest.com, facebookintegration.com, facebookjournal.com, facebookking.com, facebookland.com, facebooksafety.com, facebookstudio.com, facebookstuff.com, freefacebookapps.com, friendsonfacebook.com, fundraisingwithfacebook.com, joinusonfacebook.com, killfacebook.com, moneyfromfacebook.com, moneywithfacebook.com, and newfacebookapplication.com.

All the domains are listed for sale on DomainMarket, although none seem to list their current prices. If Facebook were to simply purchase all 21, it would probably not put any content on any of them and simply have them redirect to facebook.com.

In the past, Facebook has sent cease-and-desist letters to various websites that either start with the word “face” or end with “book” – but it has also avoided many legitimate sites that fit these criteria, or even use the whole word “Facebook.” For example, Facebook has yet to complain about allfacebook.com or insidefacebook.com, both of which are blogs that cover the social network.

Facebook bans 20,000 accounts daily

Facebook chief privacy advisor Mozelle Thompson appeared before the Australian Parliament’s cyber-safety committee this week to discuss Internet-related security issues. Thanks to the event, we learned that about 20,000 users are kicked off Facebook every day for various infractions, including for lying about their age.

“There are people who lie. There are people who are under 13 [accessing Facebook],” Thompson told Federal Parliament’s cyber-safety committee, according to The Telegraph. “Facebook removes 20,000 people a day, people who are underage.”

Although the company requires its users to be at least 13-years-old, the limit is easily circumvented, like on pretty much any website on the Internet. “While the social network has mechanisms to detect liars,” Thompson admitted that “It’s not perfect”.

The original report suggested that the 20,000 accounts banned daily are all for individuals found not to be at least 13-years-old. This is not true; the number actually includes accounts deleted for any serious rule-breaking. Furthermore, it does “not include the proactive efforts that actually prevent fake or under age accounts from being created.”

“At Facebook, we take safety very seriously and we were pleased to participate in a hearing in Australia to talk about our safety policies, practices and systems,” a company spokesperson said in a statement. “As we explained in the hearing, these efforts include removing numerous accounts everyday for activities including spamming, posting inappropriate content, and violating age restrictions.”

How does Facebook’s résumé count compare to other online giants? Well, Facebook is still a relatively small company but it’s very clear that the number is quite large, though definitely not the highest. For example, Google, arguably the largest Web company, receives somewhere around 1 million résumés each year, with the record for one week being 75,000.

Google had some 24,400 employees last year, while Facebook had over 2,000. It’s therefore fairly impressive that a company that is 12 times smaller, and has significantly fewer positions available, received just four times fewer applications last year.

In December 2010, the social network was named the best company to work for in the US. I’d therefore be very surprised if Facebook did not set a new résumé record for itself this year.
