Samsung electronics seeks China turnaround, unveils mid-tier handsets with premium feel

The Galaxy A3 and A5 will be Samsung's first devices to feature fully metal bodies and its thinnest smartphones to date. In size, they are comparable to those of the top-of-the-line Galaxy S5, though of lesser screen resolution quality.

Samsung said on Friday that it will start selling the Galaxy A3 and A5 in China sometime in November. It classified them as mid-tier, and said they will be launched in other "select markets", without disclosing the pricing.

The announcement, combined with hopes for an earnings recovery and bigger dividends, pushed Samsung's shares to a two-month high in Seoul in midday trade on Friday.

The news comes a day after Samsung reported its worst quarterly operating profit in more than three years. Earnings from its handset division slumped 73.9 percent from a year earlier.

The company said its responses to "rapid shifts in the competitive landscape" were not quick enough. It vowed to revamp its offerings.

"For our mid to low-end smartphones we will enhance product competitiveness by differentiating our displays and materials as well as upgrading camera functionality," Senior Vice President Kim Hyun-joon told analysts on Thursday.

The world's smartphone leader is regrouping as it lost market share in annual terms for the third straight quarter in July-September, according to Strategy Analytics.

It has been beaten by Apple Inc's iPhones in the premium segment and undercut by Chinese rivals like Lenovo Group Ltd and Xiaomi Inc at the bottom end.

China for new security concept to improve ties with India

Chinese Ambassador Wei Wei also said that China and India should work closely to push for a mutually beneficial global economic regime and oppose protectionism of any form.

"We should promote new security concept featuring mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality and cooperation," he said while delivering a lecture at the Institute of Defence and Strategic Affairs.

The comments by Wei Wei came three days after Chinese President Xi Jinping's Special Envoy and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held extensive talks with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj during which both sides agreed to further boost ties in diverse fields.

With improving relations, the two countries are exploring the possibility of having joint exercises between the air forces and the navy, besides the armies which have held three exercises so far and agreed to hold the fourth one in India this year.

Seeking better economic and trade ties, Wei said both the countries should actively seek "common development" while following the principle of mutual benefit, cooperation and win-win situation.

He said both countries should make efforts to achieve "peaceful co-existence, equal participation and competition on an equal footing".

"We should respect each other's rights to make independent economic decisions, advocate a mutually beneficial global trade and economic regime and oppose protectionism in any forms," he said.

China is India's biggest trading partner with two-way trade reaching close to USD 65 billion in 2013, according to official figures. However, the trade deficit in favour of China continued to mount to around USD 40 billion which is a matter of concern for India.

India has consistently been raising the issue of increasing trade deficit and seeking greater market access in China to bridge the gap.

World Bank forecasts disappointing growth for developing countries

In its latest Global Economic Prospects (GEP) report, the bank said signs point to strengthening of developing countries' economy in 2015 and 2016 to 5.4 and 5.5 percent, respectively.

For this year, the Bank has lowered its forecast for developing countries at 4.8 percent, down from its January estimate of 5.3 percent.

China is expected to grow by 7.6 percent this year but this will depend on the success of rebalancing efforts. If a hard landing occurs, the reverberations across Asia would be widely felt, the Bank said.

"Growth rates in the developing world remain far too modest to create the kind of jobs we need to improve the lives of the poorest 40 percent," said World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim.

"Clearly, countries need to move faster and invest more in domestic structural reforms to get broad-based economic growth to levels needed to end extreme poverty in our generation," Kim said.

The global economy, it said, is expected to pick up speed as the year progresses and is projected to expand by 2.8 percent this year, strengthening to 3.4 and 3.5 per cent in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

High-income economies will contribute about half of global growth in 2015 and 2016, compared with less than 40 percent in 2013, it added.

Kaushik Basu, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at the World Bank said the financial health of economies has improved.

"With the exception of China and Russia, stock markets have done well in emerging economies, notably, India and Indonesia. But we are not totally out of the woods yet," he said.

"A gradual tightening of fiscal policy and structural reforms are desirable to restore fiscal space depleted by the 2008 financial crisis. In brief, now is the time to prepare for the next crisis," Basu said.

India's defence budget is one third of China: Pentagon

The official annual defence budget of China in the year 2013 was USD 119.5 billion against India's USD 39.2 billion, the Pentagon said on Thursday in its annual report on China, which was submitted to the Congress.

    

For comparison, the national defence budget of Russia in the year 2013 was USD 69.5 followed by that of Japan of USD 56.9 billion.

  

The annual budget of South Korea was USD 31 billion followed by USD 10.8 billion, the Pentagon said adding that tensions remain along the India-China border.

  

"Despite improving political and economic relations between China and India, tensions remain along their shared 4,057 km border, most notably over Arunachal Pradesh, which China asserts is part of Tibet, and over the Aksai Chin region at the western end of the Tibetan Plateau," the Pentagon said.

  

"In 2009, China and India said they would establish a hotline between their Prime Ministers after exchanging barbs over the status of the border region of Arunachal Pradesh," said the report ‘Military and Security Developments Involving the People's Republic of China 2014’ that runs into over 90 pages.

    

"By 2011, however, progress still lagged as India reportedly found trouble obtaining suitable encryption technology to establish the hotline.

    

Chinese and Indian officials met in late September 2013 to finalize the text of the Border Defence Cooperation Agreement, which will supplement existing procedures managing the interaction of troops along the Line of Actual Control," the Pentagon said.

Chinese Helicopter Rescues 52 From Ship Trapped in Antarctic Ice

सिडनी। अंर्टाकटिका में बर्फ और बर्फीले तूफान के बीच पिछले एक हफ्ते से फंसे रूसी अनुसंधान जहाज आइसबाउंड के सभी 52 यात्रियों को सुरक्षित बचा लिया गया है। उन्हें सुरक्षित निकालने में बर्फ काटने वाले आस्ट्रेलिया आपूर्ति जहाज ने अहम भूमिका निभाई। इस जहाज से ही हेलीकॉप्टर भेजकर कुछ फेरे लगाकर अंर्टाकटिका के मौसम पर शोध करने के गए वैानिकों को सुरक्षित निकाला गया। आस्ट्रेलियाई मैरीटाइम सेफटी अथारिटी ने बताया कि अब एएमएसए ने उन्हें सलाह दी थी जिसका पालन करते हुए वह सभी 52 यात्रियों को सुरक्षित तरीके से आस्ट्रेलियाई जहाज पर ले आए हैं। हालांकि रूसी जहाज अभी भी बर्फ में फंसा हुआ है। एक चीनी बर्फ तोड़ने वाले जहाज के एक हेलीकॉप्टर की मदद से 12 फेरे लगाकर इन लोगों को सुरक्षित लाया गया। 

उल्लेखनीय है कि रूसी जहाज पिछले 24 दिसंबर से फ्रेंच बेस से 100 अक्षांशीय मील की दूरी पर बर्फ बन चुके महासागर में फंस गया था। कई देशों के जहाजों से तब से उस जहाज तक पहुंचने की कोशिश की लेकिन मीलों जमी बर्फ के कारण कोई भी जहाज के करीब तक नहीं पहुंच पाया था। बर्फीले तूफान के कारण कई दफा आस्ट्रेलिया बचाव दल के कई हेलीकाप्टर भी उस स्थान पर उतर नहीं पा रहे थे। क्योंकि वहां मौसम खराब होने से कुछ नहीं दिख रहा था।

बेंगलूर। भारत रत्न सम्मान पाने वाले प्रसिद्ध वैज्ञानिक प्रो.सीएनआर राव देश में विज्ञान की उपेक्षा व वैज्ञानिक शोध के लिए बहुत कम धन मिलने से आहत हैं। इस मुद्दे को लेकर कुरेदने पर वह रविवार को गुस्से में इतना कम धन आवंटित करने के लिए नेताओं को 'इडियट्स' तक कह डाला।

उन्होंने सख्त लहजे में यह भी कहा कि जितना पैसा सरकार ने विज्ञान क्षेत्र को दिया है, हम लोगों ने उससे बहुत अधिक किया है।

प्रधानमंत्री के वैज्ञानिक सलाहकार परिषद के अध्यक्ष राव पुरस्कार की घोषणा के दूसरे दिन संवाददाता सम्मेलन को संबोधित कर रहे थे। उन्होंने शोध के लिए और संसाधन मुहैया करने की जरूरत पर बल दिया।

एक संवाददाता ने जब देश में हो रहे वैज्ञानिक शोध के स्तर के बारे में सवाल किया पर राव आपा खोते हुए बरस पड़े 'क्यों इन बेशर्म मूर्खो., इन नेताओं ने हम लोगों के लिए इतना कम दिया। इसके बावजूद हम वैज्ञानिकों ने कुछ किया है।' विज्ञान के लिए हमारा निवेश बहुत कम है, देर से मिलता है.. जो पैसा हमने पाया है हमने काम करके दिखाया है। इसके लिए हमें जो पैसा मिल रहा है यह कुल मिलाकर कुछ नहीं है।

चीन की प्रगति के बारे में उन्होंने कहा कि हम भारतीय कड़ी मेहनत नहीं करते हैं, हम चीनियों की तरह नहीं हैं। हम आराम तलबी हैं और उतने राष्ट्रवादी भी नहीं हैं। हमें कुछ अधिक पैसा मिलता है तो हम विदेश जाने को तैयार हो जाते हैं। देश में वैज्ञानिक मिजाज भी नहीं है। सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी के बारे में उन्होंने कहा कि इसका विज्ञान से कोई लेना देना नहीं है। इससे कुछ लोग पैसा बनाते हैं और काम करने वाला पूरा कुनबा नाखुश है।

भारत के भविष्य के बारे में इस शीर्ष वैज्ञानिक ने कहा कि यह इससे जुड़ा है कि शिक्षा और विज्ञान में भारत कितना खर्च करता है। जिन देशों ने दुनिया में वास्तव में प्रगति की है वे ऐसे देश हैं जो वैज्ञानिक ढंग से आगे हैं। दुर्भाग्य से देश में विज्ञान के लिए उतनी सहायता नहीं मिलती जितनी मिलनी चाहिए।

शंघाई। चाइना ओपेन सुपर सीरीज बैडमिंटन में गुरुवार का दिन भारतीय शटलरों के लिए काफी निराशाजनक रहा। भारत की स्टार खिलाड़ी साइना नेहवाल को महिला सिंगल्स के दूसरे दौर में हार का सामना करना पड़ा, वहीं पारुपल्ली कश्यप भी पुरुष सिंगल्स मे दूसरे दौर से आगे नहीं बढ़ सके।

दुनिया की सातवें नंबर की खिलाड़ी साइना को चीन की गैरवरीय सुन यू के हाथों 21-16, 15-21, 17-21 से हार झेलनी पड़ी। एक अन्य मुकाबले में अरुंधति पंतावने को तीसरी वरीयता प्राप्त चीन की वांग यिहान ने 21-13, 21-10 से हराकर टूर्नामेंट से बाहर का रास्ता दिखाया। पंतावने ने पहले दौर में जापान की इरिको हिरोसे को हराकर बड़ा उलटफेर किया था। पुरुष सिंगल्स में कश्यप को जापान के केंतो मोमोटा ने 21-11, 21-12 से मात दी।

सत्र में अपना पहला खिताब जीत ने की कोशिशों में लगी साइना ने पहले गेम में अच्छा खेल दिखाते हुए जल्द ही 4-1 की बढ़त ले ली थी और लगातार इसे बरकरार रखते हुए गेम अपने नाम किया। हालांकि दूसरे गेम में भारतीय खिलाड़ी के प्रदर्शन खराब रहा। सून ने शुरुआत में ही 3-0 की बढ़त ले ली और अंत तक बढ़त बरकरार रखते हुए गेम जीत मैच को बराबरी पर ला दिया। तीसरे गेम में दोनों के बीच रोमांचक टक्कर देखने को मिली। साइना ने लगातार तीन अंक झटक कर स्कोर 8-8 कर दिया, लेकिन चीनी प्रतिद्वंद्वी ने लगातार सात अंक लेकर 15-8 की बढ़त ले ली। हैदराबादी शटलर ने हार नहीं मानी और लगातार सात अंक लेकर गेम को 15-15 की बराबरी पर ला दिया, लेकिन सून ने चार अंक लेकर मैच अपने नाम किया।

Standard and Poor Puts onus of Powering up India Economy on Next Govt

नई दिल्ली [जाब्यू]। आने वाले समय में देश की क्रेडिट रेटिंग क्या होगी यह अब पूरी तरह से केंद्र में आने वाली अगली सरकार के आर्थिक एजेंडा पर निर्भर करेगा। अंतरराष्ट्रीय रेटिंग एजेंसी स्टैंडर्ड एंड पुअर्स ने चेतावनी दी है कि अगर केंद्र में आने वाली नई सरकार के एजेंडा से आर्थिक सुधार हटे तो देश की रेटिंग को घटाया भी जा सकता है।

मौजूदा सरकार राजकोषीय घाटे को काबू में रखने के लिए जूझ रही है और विदेशी निवेश के प्रवाह में भी कमी हो रही है। लेकिन एसएंडपी चुनाव से पहले भारत की क्रेडिट रेटिंग की समीक्षा नहीं करेगी। एजेंसी ने स्पष्ट कर दिया है कि रेटिंग की समीक्षा का काम अब केंद्र में नई सरकार बनने के बाद ही होगा। फिलहाल एसएंडपी ने भारत को निगेटिव आउटलुक के साथ बीबीबी-रेटिंग पर रखा हुआ है। यह किसी भी देश के लिए निवेश की न्यूनतम ग्रेड की रेटिंग है। 

एजेंसी ने एक बयान में कहा कि इस रेटिंग में सकारात्मक सुधार तभी हो सकता है जब नई सरकार विकास की रफ्तार बढ़ाने की दिशा में कदम उठाएगी। आर्थिक सुधारों को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए भी सरकार को प्रयास करने होंगे। लोकसभा के अगले चुनाव मई 2014 में होने हैं। 

साल 2012-13 में देश की आर्थिक विकास की रफ्तार एक दशक के निचले स्तर पांच फीसद पर आ टिकी थी। चालू वित्ता वर्ष की पहली तिमाही में तो यह घटकर 4.4 फीसद ही रह गई है। एसएंडपी का कहना है कि अगर नीतिगत जड़ता इसी तरह बनी रहती है तो रेटिंग को घटाया भी जा सकता है। 

उधर एसएंडपी की इस चेतावनी को लेकर सरकार ज्यादा गंभीर नहीं है। वित्ता मंत्रालय में आर्थिक मामलों के सचिव अरविंद मायाराम ने इस पर प्रतिक्रिया व्यक्त करते हुए कहा कि रेटिंग एक सामान्य प्रक्रिया है। इसे लेकर चिंता करने की आवश्यकता नहीं है।

Record 2170 Billionaires Globally, Asia Fastest-Growing Region

नई दिल्ली। पूरी दुनिया मंदी के शिकंजे से निकलने को कसमसा रही है मगर दौलतमंदों के लिए यह जैसे एक मौका बनकर आया है। तभी तो अरबपतियों की संपत्ति में इतना इजाफा हुआ कि उनकी संख्या रिकॉर्ड 2,170 पर पहुंच गई। मजेदार बात यह है कि वर्ष 2009 में जब ग्लोबल वित्तीय संकट अपने चरम पर था तब से लेकर अब तक रईसों की संख्या 810 बढ़ी है। साथ ही इनकी कुल संपत्ति उस समय के मुकाबले बढ़कर दोगुने से भी ज्यादा हो गई है।

वेल्थ-एक्स और यूबीएस की वर्ष 2013 के अरबपतियों के सूचकांक में उन लोगों को शुमार किया गया है जिनकी संपत्ति 30 करोड़ डॉलर या इससे ज्यादा है। सूचकांक के मुताबिक, वर्ष 2013 में अरबपतियों की संख्या में सबसे तेज बढ़ोतरी एशिया में ही हुई है। इस दौरान इस क्षेत्र में 18 नए अरबपति शामिल हुए हैं। यहां दौलतमंदों की संख्या इससे पिछले साल के मुकाबले 3.7 फीसद बढ़ी है। वहीं, इनकी संपत्ति में 13 फीसद का इजाफा दर्ज किया गया है। वहीं, ग्लोबल स्तर पर इनकी संख्या नए रिकॉर्ड पर पहुंच गई है।

इन रईसों की कुल संपत्ति 65 खरब डॉलर हो गई है। यह वर्ष 2009 में 31 खरब डॉलर थी। इनकी संपत्ति का अंदाजा इस बात से भी लगाया जा सकता है कि यह अमेरिका के बजट घाटे को वर्ष 2024 तक पाटने के लिए पर्याप्त है।

इसके अलावा अमेरिका और चीन को छोड़कर बाकी किसी भी देश के सकल घरेलू उत्पाद (जीडीपी) से कहीं ज्यादा है। इन 2,170 दौलतमंदों के पास औसतन तीन अरब डॉलर की संपत्ति है। रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक यूरोप में सबसे ज्यादा 766 अरबपति हैं। वहीं, अमेरिकी अरबपतियों के पास सबसे ज्यादा 2,158 अरब डॉलर की संपत्ति है। वहीं, एशिया में अल्ट्रा हाई नेटवर्थ इंडिविजुअल्स (यूएचएनआइ) की संख्या 44,505 है। इनके पास कुल 6,590 अरब डॉलर की संपत्ति है। यूएचएनआइ में वे लोग भी शामिल हैं जिनके पास 30 करोड़ डॉलर से कम संपत्ति है। इनमें से 60 फीसद अरबपतियों ने खुद की बदौलत संपत्तियां बनाई हैं, जबकि 40 फीसद को विरासत में मिली है।

Indian Women Rach Final in Asian Champions Trophy

नई दिल्ली। भारत की महिला हॉकी टीम ने अपना प्रभावशाली प्रदर्शन जारी रखते हुए जापान के काकामिगहारा में खेले जा रहे एशियाई चैंपियंस ट्रॉफी टूर्नामेंट के फाइनल में जगह बना ली है। भारतीय महिलाओं ने सोमवार को खेले गए मुकाबले में मलेशिया को 5-1 से हराकर फाइनल में जगह बनाई। हाफ-टाइम तक 1-1 से बराबरी पर रहने बाद भारत ने दूसरे हाफ में चार गोल किए और महिला वर्ग में चार टीमों के बीच खेली जा रही प्रतियोगिता में लगातार दूसरी जीत दर्ज की।

टूर्नामेंट के शुरुआती मैच में अधिक रैंकिंग वाले चीन को 4-2 से हराने वाली भारतीय टीम अपने आखिरी राउंड रॉबिन मैच में गुरुवार को मेजबान जापान से भिड़ेगी। यह शनिवार को होने वाले फाइनल के लिए ड्रेस रिहर्सल जैसा होगा क्योंकि जापान ने भी दो मैच में दो जीत से फाइनल में जगह बना ली है। जापान ने एक अन्य मैच में चीन को 5-1 से हराया। 

मलेशिया के खिलाफ भारतीय टीम ने धीमी शुरुआत की। मलेशिया की कप्तान नादिया अब्दुल रहमान ने 15वें मिनट में पेनाल्टी कॉर्नर पर गोल किया, लेकिन नौ मिनट बाद ही पूनम रानी ने पेनाल्टी पर गोल कर भारत को बराबरी दिलाई। दूसरे हाफ में भारतीय टीम छाई रही। उसके लिए नमिता टोपो (44वें मिनट), रितु रानी (52वें मिनट), अमनदीप कौर (54वें मिनट) और दीप ग्रेस एक्का (65वें मिनट) ने गोल किए।

Saketh-Somdev Enter in Second Round

नई दिल्ली। भारत के साकेत मयनेनी ने अपने करियर की सबसे बड़ी जीत दर्ज करते हुए चार्लोट्सविले एटीपी चैलेंजर टूर्नामेंट के दूसरे दौर में जगह बना ली है। साकेत ने पहले दौर में विश्व के 83वें नंबर के खिलाड़ी टिम शमिक को हराया। भारत के सोमदेव देववर्मन ने भी पहले दौर की बाधा पार कर ली।

विश्व के 313वें नंबर के खिलाड़ी साकेत ने स्थानीय खिलाड़ी को एक घंटा 55 मिनट चले मुकाबले में 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 से मात दी। दूसरी वरीयता प्राप्त सोमदेव ने ऑस्ट्रेलिया के सैमुअल ग्रोथ के खिलाफ पहला सेट गंवाने के बावजूद 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 से पराजित किया। सोमदेव को यह मुकाबला जीतने के लिए तकरीबन दो घंटे का समय लगा। इसके साथ ही सोमदेव ने ग्रोथ के खिलाफ 2009 में मिली हार का हिसाब पूरा कर लिया। सोमदेव इस टूर्नामेंट के डबल्स वर्ग में भी जोड़ीदार सनम सिंह के साथ हिस्सा ले रहे हैं। पहले दौर में भारतीय जोड़ी का सामना वाइल्डकार्ड धारक मिशेल फ्रेंक और माक स्टाइलिंगर की जोड़ी से होगा।

जोकोविक- फेरर दूसरे दौर में

 

पेरिस। दुनिया के नंबर दो टेनिस खिलाड़ी नोवाक जोकोविक और स्पेन के डेविड फेरर ने अपने-अपने मुकाबले जीतकर पेरिस मास्टर्स टेनिस टूर्नामेंट के तीसरे दौर में पहुंच गए हैं। 

बुधवार को खेले गए दूसरे दौर के मैच में दूसरी वरीयता प्राप्त जोकोविक ने फ्रांस के पीटर हर्बट को सीधे सेटों में 7-6, 6-3 से शिकस्त दी। अगले दौर में जोकोविक का सामना अमेरिका के जॉन इस्नेर से होगा। 13वीं वरीयता प्राप्त इस्नेर ने दूसरे दौर में पोलैंड के माइकल परजिसेनजी को 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 से पराजित किया। तीसरी वरीयता प्राप्त फेरर ने चेक गणराज्य के लुकास रोसोल को 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 से पराजित किया। अब फेरर का सामना फ्रांस के निकोलस माहूत और गाइल्स सिमोन के खिलाफ होने वाले मैच के विजेता से होगा। 

स्पेन के निकोलस अलमाग्रो भी तीसरे दौर में पहुंचने में सफल रहे हैं। अलमाग्रो ने क्रोएशिया के इवान डोडिग को 6-4, 6-3 से मात दी।
