Two wickets inside three balls in the penultimate over and an inexplicable crossover made the task very difficult for Pakistan. The final over of the match began with Pakistan needing 10 runs for victory with just two wickets in hand and Shahid Afridi not on strike. Ravichandran Ashwin bowled Saeed Ajmal round his legs to take India closer to an unlikely victory. But all said and done, Pakistan were basically just a couple of big hits away.

And that was exactly what happened. Though Ashwin got Saeed Ajmal out bowled around his legs in the first ball, Afridi was back on strike in the third ball. Ashwin pushed the long-on and long off right to the ropes and also gave a real zip to his carrom balls but Afridi connected both the deliveries, though he failed to time them properly. Still, they sailed over long and wide long-off respectively. Game over. Incredibly, the straight boundaries were set only at 65 metres for this game.

Pakistan got themselves under enormous pressure during the chase, but 245 was never going to be a winning total on this pitch. Despite several stumbles, Pakistan finally made it, thanks to Afridi at the end and Mohammad Hafeez at the start. Afridi’s last big innings came eight months ago, on July 13 last year at Providence. He made 76 at a strike rate of 138. Of late he has become more of a bowler than batsman. On Sunday, he played a blinder, hitting 34 not out off 18 balls when things threatened to spiral out of control in the chase. “I’m very happy for Afridi. He copped so much criticism. But we always have faith in his ability. He’s a match-winner,” captain Misbah-ul-Haq said. Virat Kohli naturally looked very dejected after the match and rued the “errors” which his team “kept on repeating”. But today, for a change, he was backed well by his bowlers.

Amit Mishra, who sat on the bench for an eternity, finally got a game and proved to be a good choice in spin-friendly conditions. An outstanding first spell of eight overs that went for just 16 runs and got him two wickets brought India back into the contest. Till his introduction in the 13th over, Pakistan were taking the game away from their arch-rivals. Mishra bagged opener Ahmed Shehzad with a straight one that pitched short but skidded off the surface.

Shehzad pulled it straight to Ashwin at short mid-wicket. Then Misbah was run out, thanks to a misunderstanding between him and Hafeez. Mishra had a fantastic pick-up at the bowling end and broke the stumps. The leggie also removed in-form Umar Akmal with a flighted delivery as Ravindra Jadeja took a very good running catch.

Fugly shifted to avoid clash with Heropanti

May 16, 2014 marked the clash of two films starring some of India's most anticipated debuts - Grazing Goat Pictures' second Hindi production Fugly which has four film debuts including that of former Olympic boxer Vijender Singh and Anil Kapoor's nephew Mohit Marweh and Sajid Nadiadwala's Heropanti starring Jackie Shroff's son Tiger Shroff.

With both films being youth centric and launching fresh faces, Akshay Kumar and Ashvini Yardi took the decision to shift the release date of Fugly to June 13, 2014, to avoid splitting the audience share.

Ashvini Yardi says, "Akshay and I both share our individual friendship with Sajid and we took the joint decision to inform Sajid that we would shift our release date to June 13, 2014. Both our films are youth oriented films and mark the launch of promising newcomers in our industry. It's important to give both the films the chance they deserve and it wouldn't be fair to divide the audience. Although the genres may be similar, their individual subject matters are very unique."

Sajid, Ashvini and Akshay are longstanding friends and Akshay and Ashvini's gesture to shift the release date of Fugly will only cement their friendship.

Fugly is a coming-of-age drama set in the by lanes of Delhi, and marks Akshay Kumar and Ashvini Yardi's second Hindi venture after OMG - Oh My God!

Suspected Islamist militants kill 85 in northeast Nigeria

Suspected Islamist militants have killed at least 85 people in northeastern Nigeria, witnesses and officials said on Sunday, in a further setback to President Goodluck Jonathan's military campaign.

Twin bomb blasts in the city of Maiduguri killed at least 46 people on Saturday evening while, around 50 km (30 miles) away, dozens of gunmen were razing a farming village, shooting dead another 39.

The attacks will heap pressure on Mr Jonathan, whose intensified military push to end the Islamist sect Boko Haram's four-and-a-half-year-old insurgency has been running for almost a year.

While the bloodshed has not diminished, the army had at least had some success in confining it to remote rural areas in recent months, so that the attack on a densely populated market area in Maiduguri will be seen as a setback.

Mr Jonathan is expected to run for re-election next year in what is expected to be a close contest.

Boko Haram, which has killed thousands in its fight for an Islamic state in northern Nigeria and become the biggest threat to security in Africa's top oil producer, is increasingly targeting the civilian population.

The attack on the village of Mainok on Saturday evening is typical of recent raids by Boko Haram as its fighters continue to target anyone they view as supporting the government's effort to end its insurgency.

"They were shooting sporadically and throwing explosives on buildings. I counted 39 bodies this morning," Mainok resident Mansur Buba told reporters in Maiduguri. "I fled the place because nobody is safe."

Mustapha Musa, another resident, said the village was in ruins with every house burned to the ground.

An emergency relief official confirmed the death toll as 39 but asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak officially...

Ukraine crisis: Russia tightens military grip on Crimea

Thousands of Russian troops are securing the region and further armour and ship movements have been reported.

The world's seven major industrialised powers have condemned Moscow's "violation of Ukraine's sovereignty".

Ukraine has ordered full mobilisation, issuing call-up papers and asking for more international support.

Russia says it is protecting its interests and those of Russian-speakers in Crimea and elsewhere in Ukraine following the ousting of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych last month.

The crisis hit Russian stock markets on Monday, with Moscow's main MICEX index dropping 9% in early trading. The rouble fell to a fresh all-time low against the US dollar and Russia's central bank raised its key lending rate to 7% from 5.5%.

The BBC's Mark Lowen in Sevastopol says Crimea is now under de facto Russian armed control although no shots have been fired.

He says two large Ukrainian military bases are surrounded and key installations like airports are occupied.

Thousands of newly arrived Russian elite troops far outnumber Ukraine's military presence, he says, with roadblocks cutting off Crimea.

Ukrainian border guards have reported a build-up of armoured vehicles on the Russian side of the sea channel dividing Russia and Crimea.

Pro-Russian troops have taken over the ferry terminal in far-eastern Crimea that operates services to Russia.

There have also been further movements of Russian ships in the Black Sea - Sevastopol is the base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Some mobile phone services are reported to be blocked.

The BBC's Sarah Rainsford in Kiev says Ukraine's interim government has called for more international support to force Russian troops to leave.

11 dead in Islamabad court suicide attack: police

The death toll was confirmed by other police officials and the spokeswoman for the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Ayesha Isani.

Isani said 20 wounded had been brought to the institute, half of them in  critical condition. The dead included a sessions judge, according to police.

Roads around the court, located in a prosperous residential sector of the city popular with foreign residents, were sealed off as police and paramilitary forces carried out a search.

Lawyer Murad Ali Shah described the dramatic moment the carnage began.

"At 9:00 am around 15 armed men surrounded the court compound. They entered the chamber and started firing," he told AFP, adding that he had helped recover several bodies.

"The attackers were armed with Kalashnikovs and hand grenades. They were wearing shalwar kameez and had long beards and long hair."

On Sunday the Pakistani government announced it was halting air strikes against suspected Taliban hideouts in the country's restive tribal areas along the Afghan border in response to the militants' ceasefire.

The government began peace talks with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) last month but the dialogue broke down after militants killed 23 kidnapped soldiers.

The military responded with a series of air strikes in the volatile northwestern tribal areas that left more than 100 insurgents dead, according to security officials.

Despite near-daily attacks by the militants and air strikes by the armed forces, Pakistan's negotiators have insisted that the door for talks is still open.

The Taliban's ceasefire announcement on Saturday was met with scepticism by analysts, who said it may have been a tactic to allow them to regroup after they had suffered heavy losses in air strikes.

The government has struck peace agreements with the Pakistani Taliban several times in the past but they have failed to yield lasting results.

The umbrella militant group emerged in response to a raid on a radical mosque in Islamabad, but Islamist violence in the country began to surge in 2004 following the army's deployment in the tribal areas.

महा शिवरात्रि के मौके पर बाबा भोले की नगरी जय शिव के उद्घोष से गुंजायमान हो गया। इस दौरान देश के कोने-कोने से आए एक लाख से अधिक शिव भक्तों ने मंदिर में जलार्पण किया। भक्तों की कतार फुटओवर ब्रिज, मानसरोवर, बीएन झा पथ होने हुए बाई पास तक पहुंच गई। हालांकि सभी को कतारबद्ध तरीके से पूजा कराया गया। जलार्पण रात 9:30 बजे तक चलता रहा। रात 10:30 बजे से चौथे पहर की पूजा प्रारंभ की गई। मंदिर में पूजा के लिए सुरक्षा के पुख्ता इंतजाम किये गए थे।

उपायुक्त अमित कुमार व एसपी प्रभात कुमार पूरी व्यवस्था पर पैनी नजर रखे हुए थे। स्थानीय लोगों को पूजा कराने की भी कुछ व्यवस्था की गई थी। मंदिर में भोले शिव व माता पार्वती के विवाह को लेकर रातभर भजन-कीर्तन चलता रहा।

शिवरात्रि के मौके पर हर वर्ष की तरह इस वर्ष भी बाबा भोले की अनोखी बरात निकली। शाम करीब 7:30 बजे बरात नगर स्टेडियम से निकली। हालांकि बरात की एक झलक पाने के लिए लोग दिन से ही अपनी-अपनी जगह सुरक्षित करने में जुट गए थे। सड़क किनारे लोग कतार में खड़े थे। इस दौरान सड़क पर दो लाख से अधिक शिव भक्तों की भीड़ लगी हुई थी। दूरदराज के गांव व दूसरे प्रदेश से भारी संख्या में लोग बरात की एक झलक पाने के लिए बाबाधाम पहुंचे। शिव की इस बरात में बसहा पर सवार शिव जी के अलावा विभिन्न देवता के रूप धरे भक्तों को देख ऐसा लगा मानो आज शिव लोक बाबा भोले की धरती पर उतर आया हो। बरात में भूत-पिशाच, नर कंकाल, साधू-महात्मा, भी लोगों के आकर्षण का केंद्र बने हुए थे। इसके अलावा छऊ नृत्य, डीजे, बैंड, गेट बत्ती, घोड़ा व उंट भी बरात में शामिल था।

कोका दैत्य बना आकर्षण का केंद्र-इस बार शिव बरात में 25 फीट उंचा व 8 फीट चौड़ा कोका दैत्य सभी के आकर्षण का मुख्य केन्द्र था। इसके अलावा पंचमुखी कालिया नाग भी सभी की नजरों पर था। आम लोगों को मतदान के लिए जागरूक करने के लिए भी एक झांकी को बरात में शामिल किया गया था। 20 पहलवानों ने शारीरिक सौष्ठव का प्रदर्शन किया। बरात नगर स्टेडियम से निकली व मुख्य मार्ग होते हुए टावर चौक पहुंची, यहां से बाजार होते हुए विभिन्न मागरे से गुजरते हुए बाबा मंदिर पहुंची। चहुंओर लाइट की चकाचौंध-भोले की शादी के मौके पर बाबा की धरती को लाइट से दुल्हन की तरह सजाया गया था। बंगाल के चंदन नगर के कलाकारों ने लाइट का ऐसा इंतजाम किया था कि जो भी इसे देखा बस देखता ही रह गया। एफिल टावर, संसद भवन, मंदिर, चर्च, मस्जिद, आदि को दर्शाया गया था। लोग इन लाइट की सजावट को देखने के लिए अनायास ही रुक गये।

बरात का जगह-जगह स्वागत-शिव बरात का जगह-जगह रास्ते में भव्य स्वागत किया गया। फल, शर्बत, पानी, ठंडई, सूखे मेवे, मिठाई आदि का इंतजाम किया गया था। आम लोग व विभिन्न सामाजिक संगठन शिव के बरात की स्वागत में जुटे थे। इसमें महिलाएं, बच्चे व बुजुर्ग भी शामिल थे। कई जगह बरात पर फूलों की बरसात की गई।

कार्यकर्ताओं का अथक प्रयास-इस बरात के सफल आयोजन में मेयर सह महाशिवरात्रि महोत्सव समिति के अध्यक्ष राजनारायण खवाड़े व उनकी टीम का अथक प्रयास शामिल है। इस टीम समाज के हर वर्ग के लोग शामिल है। 1994 से हर वर्ष आयोजित ये अनोखी शिव बरात सामाजिक समरसता का अद्भुत मिसाल बन गयी है।

सुरक्षा के पुख्ता इंतजाम- इस मौके पर सुरक्षा के पुख्ता इंतजाम किए गए थे। बरात के रूट पर जगह-जगह पर लाठी पार्टी व सशस्त्र बल तैनात किया गया था। सादे लिबास में भी पुलिस वाले हर गतिविधि पर नजर रखे हुए थे। इसके अलावा गश्ती दल भी अपना काम कर रही थी। बरात के रूट को दोपहर से ही सील कर दिया गया था। जगह-जगह बैरिकेड लगा दिया गया था और वहां पुलिस वाले मुस्तैद थे। वाहन के रूट में परिवर्तन कर दिया गया था।

भांग-फलाहारी जलेबी का लिया आनंद- शिव की शादी हो और लोग भांग न खाएं ये कैसे हो सकता है। आज भांग की काफी डिमांड देखी गई। लोग इस वक्त का भरपूर आनंद उठाना चाहते थे और वे भंग के रंग में डूब गए। इसके अलावा हर इलाके में सड़क किनारे फलाहारी जलेबी व मिठाई भी खूब बिकी।

Kedarnath four valves may be opened

महाशिवरात्रि के पर्व पर ग्यारहवें ज्योतिर्लिग भगवान केदारनाथ के कपाट खोलने की तिथि घोषित कर दी गई है। श्रद्धालुओं के लिए मंदिर के कपाट चार मई को सुबह छह बजे खोले जाएंगे। पिछले साल जून में आई आपदा के बाद क्षतिग्रस्त गौरीकुंड-केदारनाथ पैदल मार्ग की मरम्मत का काम तेजी से किया जा रहा है। उम्मीद जताई जा रही है कि 30 अप्रैल तक पैदल मार्ग के साथ ही केदारनाथ राष्ट्रीयराजमार्ग पूरी तरह से दुरुस्त कर लिये जाएंगे।

गुरुवार को भगवान केदार के शीतकालीन प्रवास स्थल ऊखीमठ के ओंकारेश्वर मंदिर में बदरी-केदार मंदिर समिति के प्रतिनिधियों, हक हकूकधारियों, पुजारियों व तीर्थ पुरोहितों की मौजूदगी में वेदपाठी ब्राह्मणों ने पंचाग गणना कर केदारनाथ मंदिर के कपाट खुलने की तिथि निकाली। कपाट मेष लगन में सुबह छह बजे खोले जाएंगे। बदरी-केदार मंदिर समिति की उपाध्यक्ष मधु भट्ट ने बताया कि तीस अप्रैल को भगवान केदार की चल विग्रह डोली ओंकारेश्वर मंदिर से केदारनाथ के लिए प्रस्थान करेगी। डोली फाटा और गौरीकुंड होते हुए तीन मई को केदारनाथ पहुंचेगी। इस अवसर पर बदरी-केदार मंदिर समिति के सीईओ बीडी सिंह, कार्याधिकारी अनिल शर्मा, केदारनाथ के मुख्य पुजारी शिवशंकर लिंग, टीगंगाधर लिंग और बागेश लिंग के अलावा हक हकूकधारी और तीर्थ पुरोहित मौजूद थे। गौरतलब है कि आपदा के बाद बीते वर्ष 11 सितंबर को शुद्धिकरण के बाद केदारनाथ मंदिर में पूजा-अर्चना शुरू कर दी गई थी, जो पांच नंवबर को कपाट बंद होने तक जारी रही।
