Assembly polls: PM Modi urges people to go out and exercise their franchise

"Urging the people of Haryana & Maharashtra to go out & cast their votes. Youngsters must show the way & ensure record turnout," PM tweeted.

The riveting contest in the two states is being seen as the first major test of Narendra Modi's popularity after BJP registered landslide victory in the Lok Sabha polls under his leadership. He had spearheaded the BJP campaign in both the states.

Modi campaigned extensively for his party during the assembly polls and held a record number of rallies any Prime Minister had addressed for state elections.

Elections are being held for Maharashtra and Haryana assemblies to elect the 288 and 90 members of Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly.

Moderate brisk polling is being recorded in the first couple of hours.

People were queuing at polling stations before the voting began at 7 am amid tight security.

Nearly seven percent turnout was recorded till 10 am in Haryana, according to the state's Chief Electoral Officer, Shrikant Walgad. 1,351 candidates, including 116 women, are contesting on 90 seats in the state. The state has over 1.63 crore voters, including 87.37 lakh women.
