Ethiopian Airlines said Monday that a flight from Addis Ababa to Rome was "forced to proceed" to Geneva Airport.
"Accordingly, the flight has landed safely at Geneva Airport," the airline said in a statement on its website. "All passengers and crew are safe at Geneva Airport."
The airline didn't provide other details. Phone calls to Geneva Airport weren't immediately answered.
A spokesman for the Swiss Federal Office for Civil Aviation confirmed that an aircraft belonging to Ethiopian Airlines landed at Geneva airport early Monday morning.
He was unable to say whether the aircraft had been involved in a hijack attempt and provided no further information.
Incoming flights from Newark and Washington have been diverted and a local scheduled flight from Lugano, Switzerland, has been canceled, according to Geneva airport's website.
An Ethiopian Airlines flight was hijacked in 1996 after taking off from Addis Ababa and crashed into the Indian Ocean after the jet ran out of fuel. The crash killed 125 of the 175 people aboard, including the three hijackers aboard who demanded the jet be flown to Australia so they could seek asylum.
