Indian cricket’s search for a potent pace attack seems eternal, especially after the 4-0 mauling at the hands of New Zealand in the ODI series. It was only apt that a battery of media persons got to interact with fast bowling legend Glenn McGrath and elicit his views on that and the ICC’s latest proposals as he starts his second year as the Director of Coaching at the MRF Pace Foundation on Friday.

On the latest ICC proposals that seek a greater role for the BCCI, ECB & CA
I haven’t seen much of the news lately. But, at the end of the day, cricket is an international game. Everyone [every country] should have a fair say.
On India’s bowling woes in New Zealand
I didn’t see too many of the games. So it’s hard to comment. In India you don’t get much bounce and carry. But when you see wickets that have them it’s easy to get carried away.
In such conditions, a bowler needs to do less rather than trying too many different things.
Lack of pace, a problem for India?
It does help when you have a Mitchell Johnson or a Dale Steyn. But the ball can come off the bat quicker too.
It all comes down to control, having a game plan and executing it.
A lot of bowlers I see these days don’t seem to have a plan. They are just running in, bowling and hoping.
On Zaheer’s non-inclusion in the Indian one-day squad
If a bowler is in good form, pick him. For the youngsters, working with a bowler who has been there for years is invaluable. That’s the best thing any young guy coming in can get.
On Ishwar Pandey
It’s great to see him in the Indian team but it’s a shame that he didn’t get a run in the ODIs. I think he would have done ok.
Let’s see how it goes in the Tests. I am impressed with him. If he get’s a chance to play, I think he will do well.
On the Pace Foundation’s future plans
We are looking at a scenario where top India pace-men can come here. We also want to work with State coaches, get their inputs and, in the process, produce better bowlers.
We are negotiating with the BCCI. It’s in the final stages.
