MS Dhoni under cloud of suspicion in IPL betting and fixing scandal

A secret report given to the Supreme Court by the Justice Mukul Mudgal committee investigating IPL Spot-fixing contains a statement from a Tamil Nadu cop that names Team India skipper MS Dhoni, Hindustan Times has reported.

Superintendent of Police G Sampath Kumar's statement to the committee cites a bookie named Kitty who claims that Dhoni and former Chennai Super Kings Principal Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of BCCI President N Srinivasan, were part of a "deal" that involved fixing in the Indian Premier League.

"We were investigating a fake passport case when we came across information related to betting. We interrogated a man called Kitty, who talked about Dhoni and Meiyappan," Kumar told the Hindustan Times.

According to the newspaper, Kumar had recommended further investigation into Kitty's claims but was subsequently transferred out of the internal security branch and is now SP, Railways, in Thiruchirapally. It is not known whether an investigation was subsequently carried out.

When HT contacted Arun Pandey, Dhoni's agent and owner of Rhiti Sports, he said, "I haven't seen the report yet. The matter is subjudice and scheduled for hearing in the Supreme Court on March 7, so till then, I would like to request people to refrain from speculating."

Dhoni might or might not be the one of the six Indian players that the Mudgal Committee report mentions to the Supreme Court in a sealed envelope. The committee has recommended further investigation into the allegations of all those named in the sealed envelope.
