All not well between Anurag, Sabrina?

It is being said that after Kashyap went public with their relationship, Sabrina hasn’t reported back to work.

According to a source, “In a recent interview, Anurag said that he was seeing Sabrina. Upon reading this, her family was shocked. Her father, in particular, was upset because he was not aware of their affair. Until recently, he only knew that she was part of a big film. He was proud of her work but this revelation has come as a shock to him.”

The source, who is close to the filmmaker, adds that since then, Sabrina has stopped answering her phone. “We only know that her father is upset with her. She has not been coming to work for the past few days,” says the source.

It may be pointed out that Sabrina, who is in her 20s and is fondly called Sabby by Kashyap, has been assisting him on his film, ‘Bombay Velvet’.

Interestingly enough, in a recent interview, the filmmaker had said that he was in a happy phase right now.

Kashyap remained unavailable for comment.

'Desi Kattey' a different take on friendship: Anand Kumar

The film, starring Jay Bhanushali, Akhil Kapur, Suniel Shetty, Sasha Agha, Tia Bajpai and Ashutosh Rana, is releasing on August 28.

"My film is about the journey of two boys and their friendship. One of them becomes a gangster while the other one becomes a shooter who goes to Olympics. Suniel plays an army officer and who turns mentor to Jay's character," Anand said.

The director, whose last film did not do well, is confident that his new movie will not suffer the fate of 'Zila Ghaziabad' which, he feels, was not promoted well.

Anand said he next plans to direct 'Pachis Hazrat Ganj'.

Rahul meets Badaun gang-rape victims’ family, demands CBI probe

Rahul said the Uttar Pradesh police cannot give them justice and the culprits should know that they cannot get away with such a heinous crime.

"They have said that the honour of their daughters cannot be brought back with money. They said they want justice and they have no faith in the UP police as their people are involved. They said that the UP police cannot get them justice. I agree with them, there can be no price for a woman's honour,” said Rahul.

"I am also in agreement with them on what they have said about the CBI inquiry. CBI inquiry should happen," he added.

The Congress vice-president, however, refrained from attacking the Samajwadi Party government which has faced a lot of flak over the sensational crime amid allegations that the local police was hand in glove with the accused.

"Whosoever have committed this crime should know that they cannot do such things in India," Rahul said

The Congress vice-president visited the home of the dalit girls and during the interaction, their family members complained that the police did not act when they approached the local police chowki.

"Had the police acted in time, our daughters would have been alive," father of one of the victims told Rahul.

The Congress leader also walked to the spot where the victims had been found hanging from a tree.

Social groups condemn police role in Badaun gang-rape

Representational picture
The groups lashed out at the lackadaisical approach of police and insensitive comments of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, after the two girls were found hanging from a tree.

The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) condemned the role of police officers in shielding the accused.

"There can be no hope of preventing or minimizing rape if our law enforcers are apathetic to it. A message must be sent that this kind of criminality will not be tolerated, particularly against minors, by ensuring that all the penal provisions on gang rape and murder are invoked, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012," a statement said.

As per reports, when the parents of the girls approached police to file a complaint, the officials refused to do so and sent them away, asking them not to worry.

Ruchira Gupta, founder and president of NGO Apne Aap Women Worldwide, echoed similar sentiments and stressed the need to hold police accountable.

"To stop rape, we need police to be held accountable. As long as police are part of the problem, poor, low caste women have nowhere to turn to for justice from men who rape them, buy and sell them," Gupta said in a statement.

"Even police believe that poor low caste women should be sexually available. There is an urgent need for police reforms and urgent need for section 166 A to challenge India's rape culture," she said, referring to the section in the Indian Penal Code that deals with a public official disobeying the law.

The groups feel police revamping is necessary.

"Unless there is a full examination of the chain of command and police is not revamped from top to toe, these tragedies will continue to occur," said CHRI director Maja Daruwala in a statement.

NGO ActionAid hailed Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi's quick response seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation and setting up of a rape crisis cell.

"We welcome the speedy and sensitive response from Maneka Gandhi who has promised that a 'rape crisis cell' will be set up which has been a long standing demand of women's rights groups," Sehjo Singh, ActionAid India's programme and policy director, said in a statement.

Expressing concern on the low rate of conviction, Singh said, "The extremely low conviction rates send out a signal to perpetrators that they are free to act with impunity and can deter women from reporting rape and other crimes of sexual violence."..

Badal to meet Narendra Modi with development plan for Punjab

Prakash Singh BadalInteracting with mediapersons on the sidelines of 'Sangat Darshan' programme in Talwandi Sabo Assembly segment here, Badal said he would soon meet Modi and Union Ministers in New Delhi to apprise them about the special needs of Punjab, which had "suffered" adversely due to the "step-motherly" treatment of the
Congress-led UPA government.

The Chief Minister alleged that the state government's plan to develop Punjab was "deliberately sabotaged" by the previous Union government.

"But now, with the formation of the NDA government at the Centre, the development of the state would get a major boost," he said.

Punjab government officials have already been asked to prepare a detailed plan regarding the development of the state and the problems faced by it so that maximum benefit could be taken from the grants under the various Central schemes, the Chief Minister said.

"The country in general and Punjab in particular has a lot of hopes from Modi," Badal said.
"Modi is a decisive and visionary Prime Minister of India and he will certainly work hard to realise the cherished dreams of every man of the country," added Badal.

Better NPA picture for fourth quarter likely, says RBI Deputy Governor

The banking system's non-performing assets (NPA) position for the fourth quarter of 2013-14 is likely to come out better than the third quarter, Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor R Gandhi said.

Use of credit ratings could be an important proactive step that a bank can take to stem the problem of increasing level of NPAs and stressed assets, he said at an Assocham organised national conference on 'Growing NPAs in banks'.

Use of external ratings

However, banks need to balance the use of external ratings, as the recent financial crisis has highlighted the dangers of over dependence on ratings.

As at end December 2013, the gross NPAs of the domestic banking system was 4.4 percent of gross advances. The final figure for March 2014 is yet to be known.

While some may view this ratio (4.4 percent) as reasonable given the economic conditions prevalent in the country and elsewhere, the total stressed assets in the banking system (which include NPAs and restructured standard assets) as at end December 2013 was 10.13 percent of gross advances of banks, Gandhi said.

"This is a cause of concern for the Reserve Bank", he said.

Why are NPAs increasing?

Gandhi highlighted that the NPA increases have been more pronounced in the case of public sector banks.

There are various factors affecting the asset quality of scheduled commercial banks adversely such as the current slowdown, global and domestic, persistent policy logjams, delayed clearances of various projects, aggressive expansion by corporates during the high growth phase etc...

Boko Haram's Mounting Toll in Trauma

The last psychiatrists remaining in the heartland of Boko Haram squeezed in a few hundred patients one recent morning. The waiting room was packed and the power was out.

The war between the Islamist insurgency and a frazzled army has left 7,000 people dead since 2011, but it has also created a backlog of anguished survivors at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital here. Inside, the nine psychiatrists usually have just minutes for each patient, and little to offer beyond a prescription for antidepressants—before the mentally ill walk back out to rejoin what has become an ever-expanding and twisted conflict.

Some 52,000 patients have active files here, the hospital says—a case load that has doubled since Boko Haram launched its campaign of killing and kidnapping.

They include a 6-year-old girl who saw Boko Haram murder her parents, her file says, and now frequently interrupts her class by shouting: "They're here!"

Boko Haram has burned down villages, shot rockets into homes, and beheaded drivers on highways in its campaign to impose Islamic law. It has forced both boys and girls into its ranks—and the recent abduction of nearly 300 schoolgirls brought the group global attention.

Nigeria's army, meanwhile, has routinely rounded up young men on slight provocation, shooting them in the streets, said human-rights groups and Western diplomats. The army denies the charges.

For all involved, the psychological toll is clear...

Thailand’s coup: Your questions answered

ROSEMONT, IL - MAY 29: Flying instructor David Schnaible (R) teaches wind tunnel flying to nine-year-old Liam Harrison at the iFly indoor skydiving facility on May 29, 2014 in Rosemont, Illinois. Guests at the facility are introduced to the sensation of free-fall skydiving as they are lifted into the air by fans which generate an upward draft from 80 to 175 miles per hour inside a 14-foot-wide circular chamber. The company operates about 30 similar facilities around the globe which are used for military and competitive skydiver training as well as recreation. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)Thai society is undergoing major change, and politics over the past decade has in part been a battle between the old royalist ruling class and an ascendant majority based in the north and northeast that has benefited from development and has begun to see itself as a political force.

Much of that struggle has played out around one man — former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a billionaire tycoon deposed by a 2006 coup who now lives in self-imposed exile to avoid a prison sentence on a corruption conviction. The issue of whether to support or oppose Thaksin and his powerful political machine has divided friends, families and the nation.

Thaksin entered politics by founding his own political party and buying the loyalty of local political bosses nationwide. He won a landslide election in 2001, and once in office he cemented his popularity among Thailand’s rural and urban poor majority with unprecedented populist policies. Thaksin was often accused of being arrogant and for bullying critics, as well as a failure to keep private business interests separate from the business of government. This alienated the educated, urban middle class and alarmed traditional ruling circles — royalists and the military — who perceived in his naked ambition a desire to usurp the prerogatives of the throne, or even destroy the nation’s revered monarchy itself...

Malawi's Joyce Banda Concedes Defeat in Presidential Election

Malawian President Joyce Banda on Saturday congratulated her arch-rival Peter Mutharika for winning the country's presidential election, whose result she had initially challenged.

Conceding defeat, Banda congratulated Mutharika for his "victory in a closely contested election" and said she was "leaving office a happy person," according to a statement.

Banda, the country's first female president, came to power in 2012 after the death of Bingu wa Mutharika, the elder brother of Peter Mutharika.

The electoral commission said Friday that Mutharika took 36.4 percent of the votes cast against Banda's 20.2 percent.

The results were announced minutes after the high court refused a last-ditch attempt to block their release and allow time for a recount.

Electoral commission chief Maxon Mbendera declared Mutharika "president-elect" after last week's vote, which Banda said was marred by "serious irregularities" and "null and void".

The results showed that Banda was beaten into third place by Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who garnered 27.8 percent of the vote.

Party spokeswoman Jessie Kabwila told AFP the MCP, which had made the bid for a recount, would challenge the results in court.

But Banda urged the country to throw its weight behind Mutharika...

David Cameron wins first skirmish in battle over EU top job

As European leaders dined on salmon carpaccio, roast beef and artichokes on Tuesday night, the Prime Minister warned them not to "shrug off" last weekend's popular Europe-wide election backlash with business as usual for an EU that was "too big and too bossy".

Following the elections MEPs are pushing to install Jean-Claude Juncker, one of the last prominent supporters of a United States of Europe, as president of the European Commission.

Mr Cameron clashed with François Hollande, the French president, who has refused to accept that his crushing European election defeat at the hands of Marine Le Pen's Front National mean that the EU should scale back ambitions to create a deeper political union.

"They did not vote against Europe but for a Europe that works," he said. "There are some countries that don't want any of the candidates."

The EU assembly has insisted that Mr Juncker should get the job because he was the spitzenkandidat, or leading candidate, of the European People's Party (EPP) which won most seats in Europe-wide elections.

Yes Prime Minister! Why Modi’s cabinet picks don’t matter

There is frenetic speculation on what sort of Cabinet There is frenetic speculation on what sort of Cabinet will Narendra Modi choose in order to deliver the big promises he has made to the nation. Normally in a coalition arrangement, as in the case of UPA, the partners were actively consulted and indeed they would make their wish known to the Prime Minister.

This routinely leaked to the media and often such likely appointments would be debated on TV channels, as had happened in the case of telecom minister A.Raja after Manmohan Singh took charge as PM under UPA II.

Coalition partners routinely put their claim on certain important ministries. Mamata Banerjee had specifically asked for Railways, a high visibility portfolio from the perspective of the common man. One was also reasonably certain that Sharad Pawar would get Agriculture, given his inclination for that portfolio...

Massive Tunnel Bomb Hits Syrian Army Base

Rebels detonated 60 tonnes of explosives packed underneath a large Syrian army base, blowing a hillside hundreds of metres (yards) into the air, an insurgent in the operation who provided footage of the attack said on Thursday.

The casualty toll from the blast was not immediately known.

An Islamic Front commander said that his brigade dug a 850-metre (2,800-foot) tunnel underneath Wadi al-Deif base, which is surrounded by rebels but has remained inside government control for the entirety of the three-year-long civil war.

Footage provided by the commander of the base, which stretches over a large area of land, showed the ground balloon up before breaking into a cloud of earth that engulfs the area.

The commander, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he did not know how many government soldiers had been killed but said it would help rebels break into the base, which has been used for attacks in the surrounding province of Idlib.

"Another attack like this and we won't even need to move in to take the base," he said via Skype, adding that once rebels take the base they would control all of the south Idlib, which is situated in Syria's northwest bordering on Turkey...

Jayalalithaa sacks Malaisamy from AIADMK

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Thursday expelled former Rajya Sabha MP K. Malaisamy from the AIADMK, a day after he said the AIADMK may back a BJP-led government. Jayalalithaa accused Malaisamy of bringing "disrepute to the party" by making statements contrary to the party's policies.

She urged all party members not to have any truck with Malaisamy. The chief minister gave no specific reason why action had been taken against Malaisamy, a retired IAS officer. A day earlier, Malaisamy had said that the AIADMK could extend support to a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance government if the need arose.

Jayalalithaa had earlier told the media that she would comment about the party's strategy only after the Lok Sabha election results were declared Friday. Going it alone in the general election, Jayalalithaa had said the BJP or the Congress would always side with Karnataka where their political stakes are high and would not share Cauvery river water with Tamil Nadu...

Sahara case: Justice Khehar recuses from hearing

Justice J.S. Khehar has recused himself from hearing the matter following which a new bench has been constituted. File photo
A “communication dated May 6, 2014 received from Justice J.S. Khehar was placed before the Chief Justice of India on May 7. On May 7 itself, the CJI has been pleased to constitute another bench to hear the matter relating to Sahara Group....,” Rakesh Sharma, Deputy Registrar of the apex court, said in a release on Thursday.

The release, read out by the official at a press conference here, said that Justice Khehar had written a letter the day when he and Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan decided a petition filed by Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy.

Justice Radhakrishnan, who retired on May 14, has gone on record saying that the bench was under immense pressure in the Sahara case.

The Supreme Court official, however, did not disclose the details of the new bench which will now hear the petitions relating to Sahara Group.

The bench of justices K.S. Radhakrishnan and J.S. Khehar in its May 6 judgement had upheld its order jailing Subrata Roy and rejected his claim that rules of natural justice were not followed in the case.

The 65-year-old Mr. Roy, who has been in jail since March 4 for non-refund of over Rs. 20,000 crore to depositors, was asked by the court to make a fresh proposal for paying Rs. 10,000 crore to get bail.

The court had passed the order on a petition filed by Mr. Roy challenging constitutional validity of its order passed on March 4 by which he was sent to jail for not complying with its order to deposit around Rs. 20,000 crore of investors money with SEBI...

Manmohan Singh's legacy: a mixed bag for history to judge

Singh, the economist credited with playing a key role in ushering in economic reforms in the 1990s, demits office after 10 years, leaving a mixed legacy of achievements and failures.

Scams that surfaced during UPA 2 may have undone the good work of the 81-year-old leader, who had achieved the distinction of serving two tenures as the Prime Minister, the longest after the first PM Jawaharlal Nehru's 17 years in office.

After Friday's counting of votes in the Lok Sabha elections in which the UPA is projected by exit polls to suffer a massive and comprehensive defeat, Singh will tender his resignation on Saturday.

A celebrated economist, he entered politics at the height of the 1991 economic crisis when late prime minister PV Narasimha Rao inducted him into the government as the finance minister.

Together they lifted the economy out of the balance of payments crisis and then paved the way for the economic reforms on which no successive government has looked back.

A technocrat who had occupied various positions including as Reserve Bank governor and secretary general of the South-South Commission, he had earned a name for probity and integrity that made him the automatic choice for Congress president Sonia Gandhi when she decided to renounce the post of the Prime Minister...

Changed geography and history became Ó Rambadha

Sunrisers Hyderabad Have A Tough Task At Hand Against Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League

After being outplayed by Mumbai Indians in their previous match, Sunrisers Hyderabad face another tough battle when they take on table-toppers Kings XI Punjab at the Rajiv Gandhi International cricket stadium in an IPL match on Wednesday.

The Kings XI Punjab have had a rampaging campaign in this edition of the IPL before the Kolkata Knight Riders got the better of them in a match on May 11 at Cuttack.

Having suffered a sudden setback, the Punjab side would be keen to come all guns blazing against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who cannot afford to lose any more matches in order to stay in contention for a place in the semi-finals.

Punjab's star duo of Glenn Maxwell and David Miller have been in scintillating form and the team's old warhorse Virender Sehwag has also, of late, been reminding about his batting prowess.

While batting has been the mainstay of Punjab, the bowling department is no less potent with the presence of pacer Sandeep Sharma, one of the top wicket-takers this season and Australian import Mitchell Johnson, who slowly gathered some momentum after a rather indifferent start...

Former Israeli PM Ehud Olmert sentenced to 6-year jail term for corruption

Ex-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was sentenced to six years' imprisonment on Tuesday for taking bribes, in a corruption case that resulted in the first criminal conviction of a former head of government in Israel.

Olmert, a centrist credited internationally with working towards a peace settlement with the Palestinians, had denied wrongdoing in a real estate deal that took place while he was in his previous post of Jerusalem mayor.

His attorneys were expected to ask the Tel Aviv court that passed sentence to allow Olmert, 68, to remain free until the Supreme Court rules on an appeal against his March 31 conviction, a process that could take months.

Two years ago, the veteran politician was acquitted of most of the major charges brought against him in separate cases involving his links to a U.S. businessman...

Nuclear Talks Will Confront Iran’s Future Capability to Enrich Uranium

As Iran and six world powers meet this week in Vienna to begin drafting language to resolve their nuclear standoff, negotiators say they are finally confronting a crucial sticking point to a permanent agreement — the size and shape of the nuclear fuel production capability that Iran will be permitted to retain.

It is a subject that, at least in public, the Obama administration steps around, acutely aware that Israel and members of Congress who are highly suspicious of the negotiations will say that Iran must be kept years from being able to develop a weapon, and that opponents of the deal in Tehran will argue that no restraints at all should be imposed.

Both the Iranians and the Western powers have said their talks so far have been productive, with little of the drama, the ultimatums and the entrenched positions that have marked previous efforts. But until now, there has been no formal discussion of how much nuclear infrastructure the United States and its allies would demand that Iran dismantle in return for the gradual easing of sanctions. “This is the sticker-shock conversation, and we haven’t had it yet,” one senior administration official said.

In a visit to Israel last week, the national security adviser, Susan E. Rice, and the chief American negotiator, Wendy Sherman, made clear that the Iranians would almost certainly retain some enrichment capability, though American officials said they never discussed specific numbers. Israeli officials say they expect the figure to be 2,000 to 5,000 centrifuges...

German FM to Visit Ukraine to Kick Start Dialogue

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier (L) and Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk take part in a news conference at Borispol airport in Kyiv, May 13, 2014.
The German foreign minister is visiting Ukraine to help start talks between the Ukrainian Government and pro-Russian separatists following declarations of independence by two eastern regions.

Germany's Frank-Walter Steinmeier is in the embattled country Tuesday to support a
“national dialogue,” part of a plan laid out by the laid out by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region declared independence Monday and is asking Moscow to consider letting it become part of Russia. The pro-Russian leader of the eastern region of Luhansk also declared that region's independence.

Separatists in both regions say 90 percent voted in favor of breaking away from Ukraine in two separate referendums Sunday. The results cannot be independently verified.

Ukraine's foreign ministry calls the elections "clumsy" and says polls by Western and Ukrainian agencies show the vast majority of those living in the east prefer a unified Ukraine.

It accuses "pro-Russian terrorists" of intimidating the majority against speaking out, and says a free and fair presidential election on May 25 is its priority...

Death toll doubles to 19 in Somali attack: African Union

African Union forces in Somalia on Tuesday said a "cowardly" bomb attack the previous day had killed 19 people, nearly double the number initially reported.

The car bomb exploded on Monday outside a bank on a busy street in the southern Somali town of Baidoa.

"The blast killed 19 innocent victims and destroyed valuable property," the AU force said in a statement, updating an earlier toll from the police of 10.

The town, which is under the control of government troops backed by AU soldiers, was wrested from the Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab rebels two years ago.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Shebab have carried out a string of bombings and vowed to overthrow the war-torn country's internationally-backed but fragile government.

"This was a cowardly attack, which highlights the vicious nature of the enemy who continues to target innocent civilians," AU envoy to Somalia Mahamat Saleh Annadif said.

The Shebab have been driven out of fixed positions in Somalia's major towns by the UN-mandated AU force, but still regularly launch attacks that include bombings and guerrilla-style raids.

Recent Shebab attacks have targeted key areas of government or the security forces, in an apparent bid to discredit claims by the authorities that they are winning the war against the Islamist fighters...

Why Rajinikanth fans will have a long wait for Kochadaiiyaan

Screenshot from Official trailer.
Superstar Rajinikanth’s eagerly awaited Kochadaiiyaan, which was to release today (9 May), has been postponed to 23 May. It has created tremors in Indian cinema as the film was to release in six languages including Tamil, Telugu and Hindi in 2D and 3D at over 3500 screens worldwide.

Rajinikanth is the biggest brand in south Indian cinema and a star with a huge opening and charisma. Remember, his last film Robot (Endhiran in Tamil) in Hindi was a huge hit across the world. Rajinikanth has terrific influence over Tamil Nadu politics, though he is not affiliated to any political party.

He is so influential among the youth and family audiences, that Narendra Modi, the PM-in-waiting, paid a courtesy visit to his Poes Garden residence in Chennai, during his election campaign in Tamil Nadu. Kochadaiiyaan’s ‘no show’ today has now cast a pall of gloom over his hardcore fans.

Said ‘Rajini’ Ravi, a die-hard fan of the actor who runs one of his fan clubs : “ We were planning to celebrate Kochadaiiyaan release in a big way with 100-feet cut-outs, ‘paal abhishekam’ (milk bath of the cut-out!), latest LED banners and a fireworks display. But our plans have gone awry. We are very disappointed and this has never happened to a Thalaivar (chief) film.”..

Pro-Russian separatists to go ahead with eastern Ukraine referendum

Ukraine_Cham(18)640.jpg
The Pro-Russia insurgency in eastern Ukraine decided Thursday to go ahead with Sunday's referendum on autonomy despite a call from Russian President Vladimir Putin to delay it.

While Putin's call on Wednesday to postpone the vote was seen as part of an effort to step back from confrontation and negotiate a deal with the West, he fueled tensions again on Thursday by overseeing military exercises that Russian news agencies said simulated a massive retaliatory nuclear strike in response to an enemy attack.

Putin said the exercise involving Russia's nuclear forces had been planned back in November, but it came as relations between Russia and the West have plunged to their lowest point since the Cold War.

On the ground in Ukraine, many have feared that the referendum could be a flashpoint for further violence between Ukrainian troops and the pro-Russia militants who have seized government buildings in about a dozen cities in the east.

The decision to hold the vote as planned was unanimous, said Denis Pushilin, co-chairman of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic...

Moscow kicks off annual military parade amid Ukraine crisis

Moscow kicks off annual military parade amid Ukraine crisis
Thousands of Russian troops on Friday marched in Red Square to mark 69 years since victory in World War II in a show of military might amid tensions in Ukraine following Moscow's annexation of Crimea.

More than 11,000 servicemen took part in the annual Victory Day parade which began with the massed troops marching to the sound of brass bands as President Vladimir Putin watched from the stands, flanked by veterans.

Putin praised the strength of Russia's "all-conquering" patriotism in his speech to the veterans and troops.

"This is a holiday when all-conquering patriotic force triumphs, when we all feel especially strongly what it means to be true to the Motherland and how important it is to be able to stand up for its interests," Putin said to shouts of "Hurrah!"

The parade took on particular significance as Russia is locked in a standoff with the West over its support for separatists in Ukraine and following its annexation of Crimea where Russia's Black Sea fleet is based in Sevastopol.

Putin was reportedly to fly directly from Moscow to take part in celebrations in Sevastopol, liberated from the Nazis 70 years ago, although this was not confirmed by the Kremlin...

Russia’s Vladimir Putin dials back tensions in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks during a news conference after a meeting with Swiss President and OSCE chairman Didier Burkhalter (not pictured) at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, 07 May 2014. Putin called on separatists in east Ukraine on to postpone a referendum on independence for the mostly Russian-speaking region and said Moscow had withdrawn troops from the border with Ukraine.
It is hard to say yet. But the Russian president appeared to do an uncharacteristic volte-face Wednesday, calling for an end to political violence in eastern Ukraine that western governments believe the Kremlin has been orchestrating, and saying he had ordered tens of thousands of Russian troops camped near the Ukrainian border to return to their bases.

Putin further dialed back tensions in the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of Donetsk by urging pro-Russia separatists here to call off a referendum on independence that they had intended to hold this Sunday.

Whether pro-Russian separatists, who often have demonstrated minds of their own, will heed Putin’s thunderbolts is one of many open questions. The immediate reaction of their leadership was to say they would gather Thursday to discuss the question...

Narendra Modi Vs Kejriwal: Two contrasting campaign styles battle it out in Varanasi

BJP rally at BHU.Narendra Modi may have enjoyed many Kodak moments in his life, but on Thursday morning he had some helicam moments, when a TV camera mounted on a toy chopper circled a minuscule crowd and built up excessive frenzy. It was manufactured hysteria, one made by TV for TV. Doesn't suit Sonia Gandhi to use words like 'unch', 'neech': Narendra Modi in Motihari

Patna: Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Friday stepped up his attack on Congress president Sonia Gandhi by raking up the caste identity issue.

Addressing a rally in Motihari district in Bihar, Modi said that it doesn't suit Sonia Gandhi to use words like 'unch', 'neech' in her election speeches.

“Madam Sonia, is defeat troubling you so much? Are you upset that these games of 60 years will end now,” Modi exhorted.

Sensing a tough fight in the remaining seats of Bihar, where caste is expected to play a major factor, the Gujarat Chief Minister said that votebank politics, dynastic politics, caste and communal politics have destroyed the nation.

Campaigning for the last phase of elections, Modi accused the Congress of playing politics of untouchability.

Further taking on the Congress, the BJP strongman raked up the issue of a Congress leader demanding the prestigious Bharat Ratna award to be taken back from legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who had advocated Modi as the next prime minister...
