Bangladesh remove openers before lunch

Ajantha Mendis practises his fielding, Mumbai, March 31, 2011
Sri Lanka went to lunch on the first day on 71 for 2 after they decided to bat in Chittagong. Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene are the unbeaten batsmen on 15 and 10 respectively.

Kaushal Silva was the first wicket to fall when he missed an attempted sweep off Sohag Gazi, falling for 11 off 46 balls. It was a difficult morning for the man who scored a century in the first Test, as the track's slightly inconsistent bounce troubled the batsmen.

Dimuth Karunaratne looked a little more comfortable, though he too fell a few overs later. He timed a short delivery from Al-Amin Hossain to point where Mahmudullah took an easy catch. He made 31 off 61 balls with four boundaries, the first of which came at the end of the tenth over. He struck three boundaries off Gazi, and another straight drive off Al-Amin.

Al-Amin bowled two good spells otherwise, keeping the openers on a leash for the better part of the session.

Bangladesh made three changes to the side that played in the Dhaka Test. Imrul Kayes is set to bat at No. 3 in place of Marshall Ayub having returned to the side after two years. Pace bowlers Robiul Islam and Rubel Hossain have been dropped, with Mahmudullah and Abdur Razzak coming in.

It meant left-arm spinner Gazi had to open the bowling, and he bowled a long first spell. He found some turn straightaway as the early morning moisture made some difference to the usual surface at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

He bowled ten overs from the pavilion end, before being replaced Shakib Al Hasan who threatened little. Inclusions Razzak and Mahmudullah were also given a few overs during the first session, without much effect.

Sri Lanka had to make two changes. They brought in Nuwan Pradeep and Ajantha Mendis in place of the injured pair of Shaminda Eranga and Rangana Herath. This is Mendis' first Test since Galle last year against Bangladesh, while Pradeep returns to the side after the Dubai Test last month.
